U.S. National Black Cat Day October 27, 2020 Lets see all the black cats out there. It’s National Black Cat Day on October 27th! ... Black cats need a little positive PR as their reputation as an omen of bad luck is well-known (and unearned, frankly). In the lead-up to Halloween, National Black Cat Day provides the chance for feline fans to show off their love for the oft-maligned, but always iconic animal. HISTORY OF NATIONAL BLACK CAT DAY The black cat carries a unique status among the wide batch of different cat breeds. In some locales, notably Scotland, Britain, and Japan, the presence or appearance of a black cat is indicative of imminent good fortune and prosperity. Beyond these regions, though, public favor of the black cat runs sharply southward. In much of the Western world, black cats are considered to be harbingers of misfortune and wickedness. This unfortunate association stems from an image that will be familiar to many readers, which is that of the black cat serving as a companion to potion-brewing, spell-casting witches everywhere. This relationship would prove to hold severe consequences for owners of black cats in America in the early 17th century. As the Pilgrims established their occupancy on the east coast of the country, they maintained a strict suspicion of anything remotely tied to the perils of witchcraft. The black cat served a symbol of the supposed evils and Satanic sympathies of witches, and as a result, those found harboring black cats would receive harsh punishments; some would even be sentenced to death. While, in general, the fears surrounding the demonic potential of witches has subsided significantly, the black cat will be left wondering why it still must suffer the consequences of a damaged collective reputation. According to several animal-advocacy groups and adoption agencies, black cats experience lower rates of adoption and higher rates of euthanasia relative to other cat breeds. Because of this, National Black Cat Day stands as a fantastic opportunity to subvert these trends and demonstrate appreciation for an animal that could itself use a little luck.

Over the last few months many of you will have spent an unusual amount of time at home with your pets. Some of you have seen this period as an opportunity to s...ettle in a new family member and have offered a ‘forever home’ to a rescue pet or taken on a puppy or kitten. As we look to the future where it is likely that you will be spending less time at home returning to work for instance how will our pets cope? Cats tend to have a more independent nature and so are generally accepting of such changes in circumstance. In fact, some cats may have struggled with their owners spending more time at home or with changes to their environment, such as that quiet spare room where they like to hang out becoming a home office. Dogs are highly social animals and much of their confidence stems from belonging to a stable social group. When separated from their owner, some dogs will become distressed and this is known as separation anxiety. If they are used to always having their family around them they are more likely to have issues with separation anxiety, especially younger dogs and puppies. This distress can result in signs such as destructive behaviour, incessant barking or toileting indoors. There are some actions you can take that may reduce the anxiety your dog experiences when they find themselves alone. Encourage your dog to have some independence by allowing them to spend time alone in your garden (if safe) and get them to spend some time each day away from you on their bed. Create their own safe place, such as a crate or a quiet room. Practise leaving them in their safe place to get them used to being left home alone. To do this, firstly take your dog for some exercise and encourage them to go to the toilet. Allow a quiet wind-down period at home before leaving them in their safe place with a favourite toy or a safe food chew. The sound of a human voice can help reassure them and so consider leaving a radio on or playing an audio book. Prepare to leave in a calm fashion and don’t say goodbye or make a fuss. Equally when you return remain calm as you are teaching them that coming and going is normal and not a big deal. Initially leave them for only a few minutes several times per day and then slowly build up to longer and less frequent periods. Try to re-enter when your dog is quiet, as rushing back in when they are howling could potentially reinforce that behaviour. It is frustrating to come home to a mess but never punish your dog for being scared as this will make the situation worse. These are just a few ideas for you to try, but if you are struggling to help your dog cope with separation or if you have any health concerns, please contact us since we are here to help you. OUR DEFENSE AGAINST COVID-19 In order to maintain the health and safety of both our staff and clients, the following social distancing protocols will be effective immediately as per local, state, and governmental agencies. A maximum of 5 people will be allowed in the waiting room at one time, including our hospital staff... All patient exams and treatments will be performed in the exam room or treatment area with only the medical staff. Clients will be asked to wait in the waiting room, outside weather permitting, or in their vehicles. All patient histories will continue to be gathered via the online form or the onsite tablet. If the online form is not sufficient, we encourage extended histories to be relayed to us via email at [email protected] The doctor will communicate with you after the exam in the waiting room or via phone, if you prefer, due to privacy considerations. Please inform the front office staff of your preference before the exam. We will continue to accept all major credit cards, Care Credit, and Scratchpay. Although discouraged due to the potential for fomite transmission of the virus, cash will still be accepted if that is your only means for payment. All high contact surfaces such as doorknobs and countertops will be disinfected after every exam and interaction with clients and medical staff. We discourage clients who are sick, have symptoms of respiratory illness, and those within the most vulnerable age population from visiting our office. Please enlist the help of a family member or friend if your pet needs to be seen at our office. If you have no option, please call in advance of your visit and we will send a medical staff member to retrieve your pet from your vehicle. Please understand that this is to protect you, the medical staff, and the general public. For questions on witness euthanasia, please call the hospital for more information on the specific protocol.

Take this opportunity to appreciate our loved ones, spend more time with family (including our pets!), but most of all thank God every day that we live in the greatest country on the face of this earth. And Rocky Shores is here for you, because never forget, we are Family.
