Last week we ...shared some details about our first keynote speaker, Marc Wouter. Today we are here to tell you a little bit about another one of our keynotes speakers, June Williamson. June is a NCARB certified licensed Architect and has her M.U.P from The City College of New York and M. Arch form MAssachusetts Institute of Technology with a tremendous background in urban design. She is currently an Associate Professor at the City College of New York, CUNY. She has taught as an assistant professor at New York City College of Technology, CUNY, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Utah, and Boston Architectural College. June has authored a number of publications most notably, Retrofitting Suburbia with Ellen Dunham-Jones. The focus of June’s keynote presentation will be retrofitting suburbia and the implications of suburban sprawl. She will touch on how the transformation of dead spaces can give way to economic development as well as strengthening the workforce. An unused strip mall can be transformed into a multi-level building where the ground floor is comprised of shops and eateries and the upper levels are housing. This would turn a dead space into a multipurpose area that encourages walkability and the support of local business.
