Audel’s post #2, as promised! This is how wood crown molding is properly installed. If you miter cut the two sides of the corner, when each side of the molding shrinks an 1/8 inch with the change in seasonal humidity, a inch gap can show from the two sides moving apart from each other. Instead, we miter cut only one side, then carefully cut away along the line with a delicate coping saw so it looks like the piece on the left. The piece on the right is run straight into ...the corner with the piece on the left fitting neatly up against it making a joint that looks mitered on both sides. When the wood shrinks, the left piece will still pull away an 1/8 inch, but the piece on the right simply slides down an 1/8 but it runs long so there’s no gap on that side. The total gap is therefore no more than an 1/8 inch. For painted moldings, we always use plaster, (it doesn’t move,) but for natural wood, this is the only way to go. See more
