Feast of St John of Shanghai. Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco was born Mikhail Borisovich Maximovitch on the 4th of June 1896 in Adamovka, a small town in the Kharkov Governate of the Russian Empire. He became an ascetic and an important hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR). In emigration, his pastoral care, sermons, and writings brought him renown, and he became known among the members of the Russian diaspora as a wonderworker to whom were... attributed powers of prophecy, clairvoyance and miraculous healings. He died during a visit to Seattle in 1966, and was canonized in 1994. Today, the relics of St John of Shanghai and San Francisco rest at Cathedral of the Theotokos, Joy of All Who Sorrow, San Francisco, California, for which he broke ground in 1961 and which was consecrated in 1977. Picturing Russia’s Peoples On June 22nd, the Russian History Museum presented a livestream event, hosted on Zoom and YouTube. Throughout this program, Executive Director Michael Perekrestov and Curator Nick Nicholson discussed various representations of Russia’s diverse population. This chat was inspired by a recent museum discovery: a book printed in the early 19th Century, held onsite in one of the monastery archives. This book was an exploration into Russian costumes, clos...ely modeled on an earlier work. The program’s scope considered how the Russian people are portrayed in both volumes and subsequent materials, from print to porcelain. Michael and Nick’s discussion also included audience-based questions. You can still watch the full recording of the livestream. And don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel! Matvei Platov (1751-1818), a hetman of the Don Cossacks, served as commander of the Cossack forces against Napoleon. At the Battle of Borodino he led raids against the rear of the French army, and then played a great role in harassing the Grand Armée after its flight from Moscow and driving it from Russia. So thoroughly did he personify the fierce, patriotic Cossack that he became a folk hero in Russia and abroad. During Platov's visit to England in 1814, he was given an extraordinary triumphal reception. Today, with a deep sense of gratitude, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the consecration of Holy Trinity Monastery's Cathedral. Among the bishops who participated in the ceremony in 1950 was St. John (Maximovitch) of Shanghai and San Francisco. The path towards building this splendid structure, which is at the heart of the monastery's life, was not easy. When Fr. Panteleimon (Nizhnik), the monastery's founder, first settled on the present location of Holy Trinity Monaste...ry, he began to build a large house with sufficient rooms for the future monastery, including its own house church. With the help of four new brothers progress continued slowly. After much labor, in 1935 the house with its church was completed and the tiny brotherhood was ready to move in. On July 17 a triumphant blessing of the house and church was held with a small group of neighbors and friends in attendance. Toward the end of the liturgy a cry of "Fire!" was heard: a fire had suddenly broken out on the second floor of the new house. In the course of a couple hours, before the eyes of everyone, the new house and its church with all of their contents totally burnt to the ground. The small brotherhood was left with out any money, in debt, under the open sky. Fr. Panteleimon and his companions were shaken and left in confusion over the tragedy, and tried to find a reason for the disaster. After deep reflection, they decided that what they had built was not worthy for what God intended for the future monastery. They began to rebuild anew, and laid the foundation for a large separate stone church, which was the first of the large buildings that now make up Holy Trinity Monastery. The cathedral was consecrated exactly 70 years ago on November 26, 1950.
