This is a giant rustic chess set made by Mark Sears, Creations In Wood, Redwood, NY. Play your queen's gambit strategy with individual style. This natural tone rustic chess table brings a warm presence to your décor. A 32" X 32" playing board is contained within a full table top surface of 36" X 36". The game play accommodates hand turned and carved pieces measuring up to a King height of 14". The table stands approximately 18" off the floor with 4" squares of alternating li...ght color hardwood and walnut. Legs are of natural pine limb wood while the top has a smooth border. Individual playing pieces are carved and turned of locally sourced pine with leather padded bases, and are designed to easily fit in a slide-through storage drawer as part of the whole unit. A full set of 3" non-padded pine checkers are included. When pieces are completely stored, the set doubles as a coffee table or side table, always inviting for the next game. Set price is $1,200 US plus applicable taxes, shipping and handling. Customer pick up also available at our shop. Two sets are currently available.

We've known for some time that we needed to move to a new shop. With time now available, the transition has started! Creations In Wood is putting up a new shop... next to our home, and the Linn Lumber Mill is once again doing a great job processing timber. One fantastic pine that had come down in a storm last year has produced some great 3" x 6" boards. Counting the rings, we found it was in the vicinity of 85 years old - with one nail. Custom molding service is available from Creations In Wood for most reproduction needs. Many times, repair requires trim pieces that are not readily available from current home supply centers. Mark Sears offers custom shaping to match most needs for both interior and exterior projects.

Rustic furniture making classes will be offered by Mark Sears In July and August through the Thousand Islands Craft School. The three types of classes will be ...held at Mark's shop and will be for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The shop will be available for most higher level needs of tools but participants are asked to bring basic tools that they own for their use as well. Class will be happening in rain or shine weather. Curved extension jams were needed for an interior window trim completion as they had not been available when the windows were purchased. Mark created a jig that... enabled him to laminate 5 narrow strips of pine in a pattern matching the inner bend of the windows. The outer arc was pieced individually. "Live Edge" or "Natural Edge" is a style where the designer or craftsperson incorporates the natural edge of the wood into the design. Mark Sears harvests loca...l trees and utilizes his sawmill to produce the live edge style trim seen in this video. Once sawn into planks, further cutting produces long stock of varying widths which is planed, stained and finished before being cut on site for finished custom trim. When two pieces are joined for a long section, the live edge is matched producing a smooth visual transition. See more

This set of rustic side railings is a custom order for a summer home in the Thousand Islands Region of New York State. The homeowners were able to tell Mark Sea...rs their idea to finish their river front deck. Mark believed he could put together their concept and began the project with his basic agreement: "If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it." Made of locally harvested white cedar, each piece of the railings was brush sanded to remove bark and bring out the natural edge of the wood. A finish of Sikkens was then added to enhance durability. Completion met with full approval. "Hi Mark, The railings are installed and are perfect. We absolutely love them. Just what we had in mind." A custom table was requested that had to be sturdy, have tapered legs, and work well in a home with antique furniture. Pine was selected as the material and pro...duction began.
