[If you don't get these messages directly and would like to, please go to https://www.ryeny.gov/services/email-notifications, scroll down and select "City of Rye News and Information."] Big Picture Foundation, Rye Act and Rye Youth Council, with a host of supportive community organizations, the City and the School District, have come through with a series of wonderful posters and, yes, lawn signs, urging the wearing of masks. The art work is by students at Rye High Schoo...l and Rye Middle School and is very, very good. You will see these around. You will, I think, like these. In terms of subject matter, this art work comes at a good time. The County is telling us that Westchester is experiencing a "serious upswing" in COVID cases (Rye is at 23 active cases - yes, we are rising, too) and we all hear on the news what is going on elsewhere. The County's concerns seem to be focused on the young - with a view to tightening in-school mask wearing and reviewing youth sports activities. We will learn more and share. In any case, please keep doing what we have been asked to do: masks, social distance and hand washing. Parents, please again impress upon your children the need to follow these precautions, even when they are off on their own together. This is hard for us, harder for them. Halloween? Yes, Halloween is happening in Rye, but with the cautions that you would expect. The long-awaited guidelines have come from the County and they are not so different from the CDC's. Regular trick or treating is deemed high risk, but instructions are provided for distanced, Coronavirus-tricking treating. Please enjoy the latter and book follow-up dental appointments. Enjoy, too, Rye Rec's "Halloween Hustle & Crawl" event on October 25. On Wednesday, Veterans Day, the Rye Youth Council will be running a virtual 2020 Rainbow Run @Home Edition this year for kids of all ages. Please register here. This Veteran's Day promises to be a full one, with a virtual American Legion event to begin, the RFRR spelling bee and the Rye Youth Council event. As always, please patronize Rye merchants and restaurants. We know we need them and they need us, all more than ever. Reading back over this message, I see the parade of fall holidays quickly moving us to the turn of the year. Pandemic or not, let's make this a good, fleeting fall. October 13, 2020 [If you don't get these messages directly and would like to, please go to https://www.ryeny.gov/services/email-notifications, scroll down and select "City of Rye News and Information."] Thinking back on our City's history with the virus since February, we have been relatively fortunate. Now nine months in, we continue to report only a small number of active cases. Though our number remains small, we are seeing an uptick this week, as is Westchester as a...Continue reading
