THANK YOU to everyone who has supported our church through our Friday Dinners, bazaars and summer festival. Your support has allowed us to restore, renovate and preserve the facade and portico of our beautiful church! A beautiful "pysanka" in the Southern Tier. Sunday before Exaltation, Недля перед Воздвиження
September 7, 2020 was the 36th anniversary of the falling asleep in the Lord of the then head of our church Patriarch Josyf Slipyj: 1892-1984. His Beatitude Josyf took over as head of our church when The Servant of God Metroplitan Andrey Sheptytsky fell asleep in the Lord in 1944. Slipyj was promptly arrested by the Soviet Secret Police and imprisoned in a Russian Orthodox Monastery in Moscow, then sent to a gulag in Siberia. St. Pope John XXIII requested President John F.... Kennedy to assist in the release of Slipyj when our Ukrainian Catholic bishops threatened to boycott Vatican II because Russian Orthodox observers were present at the Council while our Spiritual leader was in their prison. Patriarch Slipyj was released by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in a prisoner swap for a Soviet spy arranged by President Kennedy. The main condition of his release was to never say what he was put through while in Soviet imprisonment. He never did tell anyone what he suffered at the hands of the Soviets. When His Beatitude Slipyj arrived in 1969 at the final session of Vatican II, he was received with a standing ovation by all the participants at the council. After the conclusion of the Holy Council, he promptly went about to organize and build the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the diaspora. We are recipients of his foresight and dedication. St. Pope John Paul II went to Patriarch Slipyj's funeral in Rome where he prayed at Patriarch Slipyj's body and kissed his hand. Once Ukraine and his church became free after the fall of the Soviet Union, Patriarch Slipyj's body was returned (as per his request) first to the Cathedral of St. George in L'viv and now resides at the Ukrainian Catholic Sobor Cathedral of the Resurrection in Kyiv. We pray that God proclaim his Beatitude Josef Slipyj as the saint we believe him to be! See more
