Protect yo neck... your eyes, & your skin. If you're like me, you lovvve the sun. Woo! I grew up in TX, where it is sunny from 5 AM til 9 PM. When I lived in CA, I would sunbathe at the beach, then go tan in the tanning beds. We have this obsession with being tanned, & having a sun-kissed 'glow'. Unfortunately, too much of what we think is a good thing can actually be bad for us...causing sun damage.... This year I had to visit an eye specialist because my vision was blurring and I was seeing 'floaters'. He told me I had sun damage to my eyes. (Picture #3) Yup. Me...the girl who luvvvs shades..and the sun. From this news to my Mom's decade journey with B squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer, I knew I needed to get really serious about protecting myself from the sun. These are tips I try to remember when in the sun: 1. Seek shade: (In this instance...shade is good. Okurrr....) Limit your direct exposure to thesun, especially between 10 am ~ 4 pm, when UV rays are strongest. 2. Cover up: When outside, where at least SPF 15 sunscreen on every part of your body that will be exposed to the sun at least 15 minutes before going outside, even if it is cloudy. Reapply every 2 hrs when in the sun. Wear clothing & a wide-brimmed hat to protect as much skin as possible. 3. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block at least 99% of broad-spectrum UV light to prevent sun damage & early formation of cataracts. 4. Get to know your skin & eyes. Issues are easier to treat when caught early. Look for new skin markings, like moles, bumps, scaly spots, or places where your skin has changed color, shape, or texture. Take note if a mole has uneven edges, differences in color, or one half that is different than the other. Get your vision checked at least once every 1 to 2 years, depending on your condition. Talk to your doctor if you notice any of changes. "It’s a word with seven billion different meanings, all unique to each human’s experience."... "I find peace in moments of intention. This idea was introduced to me years ago, when I first read Thích Nht Hnh’s 'Being Peace'. He writes, You are not an observer, you are a participant. "I realized that my every move, interaction, and breath has an impact on the world around me. I am a participant." "Through my recent embrace of the mindful life, I have been able to be an active practitioner of intentional peace. Everything I do should be done with intention; it is then that we are able to connect with the world around us genuinely." "More than ever, our ability to connect with others is in jeopardy. We live in a world full of hate and meaningless distractions. It is our job, my job, to be a vehicle for peace in a unique way." "To live a mindful life, I choose to practice intentional peace. ~Centering for Self-care & Resilience~ dedicated to my fellow Nurses "Emotional distress is usually the result of dwelling in a memory of upsetting events, or anticipating negative outcomes which have yet to occur (worry). A mind stagnated by troubling emotions, anger, anxiety, guilt, & sadness, is impaired to make healthy & rational responses. To organize the mind, distress must be compassionately addressed. These emotions are less stressful when experienced through the p...rocesses of centering, meditation, & reflection. Centering invites us to mindfulness, accepting the present moment with openness, curiosity, & a willingness to be with what is. It invites you to pause; becoming aware of your body & breath, cutting the brain chatter, & provides opportunity for purposeful thought. One method to prevent compassion fatigue during your shift is to re-center yourself often: ‘center before you enter’. Between patients or interactions take a few deep breaths and center yourself in your own heart space~ that sacred place within you where the impulse to serve as a healthcare practitioner originated. Offer yourself gentle tenderness and compassion. ~ Centering ~ Close your eyes, or find a soft gaze moving your attention within. Focus on your breathing, a scent, sensation, sound, or calming music. Allow your mind to settle. Ignore thoughts of past & future. Breathe in & concentrate on the present moment. With practice you will feel a shift in your consciousness, resulting in a relaxed but alert awareness, able to be fully attentive to the present. Nurses using this practice between patient encounters notice they feel more available to bring peaceful healing into the patients’ space. The Science: Centering remodels the brain, restructuring for relaxed & mindful reactions. Holistic nurses use mindfulness to ground themselves, or to return to a state of mental clarity, prepared to make thoughtful & reasonable conclusions under stressful circumstances.
