Sign up for one day or or both! On Saturday,Brenda Quinn(@bquinnpottery ) will demonstrate ways she marries form and surface to create her decorative utilitarian wares. Techniques that will be covered include: Throwing and altering forms and making and using simple molds. Strategies for developing new forms and surface patterns will be explored. Various surface and glazing techniques will be covered including layering of underglazes, glazes, wax resist, creating and using sponge stamps, as well as inlay techniques, sprigging and more. On Sunday, join Baltimore artistMatt Hyleck to explore a variety of plate forms; dessert plates, dinner plates and platters for the dinner table. Demonstrations will reinforce traditional throwing technique combined with the use of simple hump and slump molds to create an assortment of plates and serving platters for decoration and finishing. An emphasis will be placed on creating pieces which best match an individual’s dining preference while providing a decorative surface ready for surface embellishments. Methods for altering the leather-hard form will be discussed in addition to glaze application and masking methods specific to the nuance of Shino. Learn how to develop a material vocabulary of color and surface that can evoke emotion, deliver poetic metaphor, make connections to cultural histories, and resonate sentiment. Getting to know ceramic raw materials can be a direct and personal experience. This workshop will help you find an approach that is comfortable and that fits your natural ways of wo...rking. Starting from your artistic intentions, you will learn to develop a unique voice in your artwork by experimenting with raw materials in an intuitive, open-ended and creative way. This live three-hour workshop will offer a playful and personal approach to developing ceramic color and surface, with a grounding in scientific methodologies and concepts. We will cover various techniques for testing glazes, slips and clay bodies, focusing on traditional and nontraditional volumetric blends such as color runs, line blends, equal part blends, triaxial and quadraxial blends, and individually-designed nonlinear blends. We will give special attention to the use of rare earth oxides for intriguing color-shifting and fluorescent results.
