October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this past week Sayville Rotary was honoured to have local Bayport resident, Sal Makely as our guest speaker. She regaled those in attendance on the story of how she and her daughter, Okiah (16) began fundraising 4 years ago for the Stony Brook Cancer Center. In true Rotary fashion, Sayville Rotary donated $250 to her cause for 2020.... To learn more about this fundraiser please visit; https://runsignup.com/Race/NY/Bayport/PrettyinPink

We unfortunately have to report that our annual Beefsteak fundraiser has been cancelled for 2020 due to the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. We are actively looking into different fundraising activities, so that we can continue to foster and support our local, national and international projects and organizations.

Thanks to Phase 3, this past Thursday, Sayville Rotarians were able to return to our "normal" weekly lunch meeting. It is the first time that we have interacted as a club for an in-person meeting since the 1st week of March. It also marked the end of an era, the last meeting hosted by Bob Draffin as President of The Rotary Club of Sayville. Like all municipalities, July 1st starts the Rotary Year and the commencement of our new slate of Officers. This coming Thursday will ...feature our new President, Brendan McCurdy taking over at the helm. We wish Brendan and his team the best of luck going into his new year. At the meeting, President Draffin hosted a year in review coupled with a high-light reel of the clubs successes and achievements during his term as president. President Draffin described this last year "Making a difference, while having fun." We are sad to report that our Annual Beefsteak, which was scheduled for July 30th, has been postponed to September 25th due to COVID 19. No decision has been made regarding our Annual Pet Parade.

Last year at this time, Sayville Rotary raised over $1800 for a NFP, www.sustainablecambodia.org, for their "Bicycles for Cambodia campaign. With no busing service available, this fundraiser raised enough money to provide approximately 50 bicycles for school aged students to commute the daily, 5-10 mile journey back and forth to school. Prior to this bicycling opportunity, they were forced to walk to school each day, sometimes enduring temperatures exceeding 100 degrees! ... Can you imagine that happening today in our society in the United States? What would the PTA say? What would the school board do? Everyday, 1.3 million Rotarians around the world are attempting to make an impact and difference in other peoples lives. What have you done lately?
