Prof. John Bailyn has been awarded a new grant by the U.S. Embassy Moscow Public Affairs Section in support of the 2021 virtual sessions of the summer school he has co-directed in St. Petersburg, Russia since 2003 (The NY-St. Petersburg Institute of Linguistics, Cognition and Culture - "NYI"). This summer will be the 20th session of NYI, and the 3rd consecutive virtual session (V-NYI). Among other things, this grant will allow some of our graduate students to participate in V-NYI as TAs.

On May 6, Andrija Petrovic gave a talk entitled ‘Vowel fronting in Serbian noun inflection' at the 57th Annual Meeting of the Chicago Linguistic Society (CLS 57). Aspects of this work have also been presented at the 30th annual meeting of Formal Approaches to Slavic Linguistics (FASL 30, May 13-16), and the 28th Manchester Phonology Meeting (MFM 28, May 26-28).

Dr. Sandhya Sundaresan and Dr. Thomas McFadden will be joining our department in the upcoming academic year. Dr. Sundaresan joins us as the Anandavalli and Dr. G. Swaminathan Endowed Research Professor in Tamil and Assistant Professor of Linguistics. Her research focuses on syntax, in particular on Dravidian syntax, and she conducts fieldwork on Tamil varieties (https://www.sndrsn.org). Dr. McFadden also joins us as Associate Professor of Linguistics. His research focuses on syntax, morphology, and historical linguistics, and he works primarily on Germanic languages and Tamil (https://www.thomasmcfadden.org).

The Department of Linguistics, in collaboration with the Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS), will virtually host the 2021 North American Computational Linguistics Open (NACLO) on Thursday, January 28, 2021 from 10am to 1pm. IACS will hold one optional practice session virtually on Saturday, January 16th. What is NACLO?... NACLO is a contest in which high-school students solve linguistic puzzles. In solving these puzzles, students learn about the diversity and consistency of language, while exercising logic skills. No prior knowledge of linguistics or second languages is necessary. Professionals in linguistics, computational linguistics and language technologies use dozens of languages to create engaging problems that represent cutting-edge issues in their fields. The competition has attracted top students to study and work in those same fields. It is truly an opportunity for young people to experience a taste of natural-language processing in the 21st century.
