History is in the making with Dr. Heather Lynch’s work studying poop from outer space! Did you know the location and color of penguin poop seen in photographs t...aken from space shares information about the size and number of penguin colonies, as well as the penguins’ diet over time? Dr. Lynch began her training in physics and applied math, and switched to studying ecology as a graduate student to tackle some of the problems associated with climate change. She shares: Today I'd probably be considered a ‘data scientist,’ which means my skills revolve around the collection and management and analysis of data. I'm actually happiest in front of my computer analyzing the data and using satellite imagery to survey Antarctica for wildlife. In my work, I'm always trying to answer questions that will lead to better conservation and management, and that means working closely with non-scientists like policymakers to make sure we are asking the right questions. Dr. Lynch is now a professor and researcher at Stony Brook University Ecology and Evolution. Dr. Lynch’s research will be featured alongside work of several other scientists in a new exhibit opening next month titled Slow Down! Explore A Journey to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica. This exhibit takes a close look at the findings of our own Claire Flynn, LICM’s STEM Initiatives Program Director, on her recent expedition to the Southern Hemisphere with National Geographic Education and Lindblad Expeditions as a Grosvenor Teacher Fellow. #womenshistorymonth #slowdownexplore #projectpenguin #gtf19 #antarctica #playlicm

Please donate today to support graduate student research! Today is Giving Day at Stony Brook University! The goal of our giving day is to support graduate student research in the Department of Ecology and Evolution. Visit our giving day page, where we have highlighted some of the graduate student research going on in our department:... https://givingday2020.stonybrook.edu//ecology-evolution-gr Please share this link with your friends, families, and associates. And please, donate if you can! Help us reach our goal. #SBUGivingDay
