Common Hands Farm has experienced a big setback to winter production. Their winter greenhouse has collapsed under the weight of too much snow in the last storm. They are currently trying to raise funds to get another greenhouse up and running so they can continue offering product in the near future. By: Ethel Recinos Ever since Cheryl Whilby became the Market Manager of Schenectady Greenmarket, her dream has been to increase the purchasing power for customers using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). COVID-19 added urgency to this mission and united the Schenectady, New York community to find a solution to the challenge of keeping good food accessible to vulnerable community members in the height of a global pandemic. It was really nice to see so many community members and folks committed to food access work in Schenectady coming together to implement nutrition incentive programs as soon as possible. From Merry Hill Farm: We raise alpacas for their fiber which we process into yarn and roving for knitting and spinning. We carry a variety of alpaca products, many of them handmade. From their website: We are a certified organic, no-till farm in the Mohawk-Hudson Valley region of Upstate NY. We grow 250 varieties of specialty veg, herbs, and flowers on 1.5 acres, plus a greenhouse full of microgreens. Our intensive style allows us to produce high yields on a small space. We grow year-round in two high tunnels and produce all of our seedlings on site in our small propagation house. Our growing methods combine centuries-old techniques with the latest in scientific un...derstanding. We use sustainable methods to grow intensively on permanent raised beds to ensure the continuing good health of our soil, and never use artificial sprays or fertilizers. The farm is expanding, with ongoing upgrades in infrastructure, equipment, and methods an exciting and fast paced place to learn. The mission of our farm is to sustainably supply our local community with as diverse a selection of fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers as we can manage, from the mundane (tomatoes, carrots and salad greens) to the exotic (fresh ginger and turmeric). Our distribution methods include a CSA, two farmers markets, and a few chosen restaurants and specialty food stores. We plan to add a farm store to our operation during 2021. See them this Sunday from 10AM-2PM outside City Hall!
