The over wintering bald eagles

Schodack Island State Park 22.01.2021

Wintering bald eagles have arrived! At least 10 eagles were seen this morning. Bald eagles tend to congregate around bodies of water not completely frozen over during the winter months. #NationalBirdDay Check out our recent post to see a video & hear some vocals from one of the eagles!... : Jessica Ingham

As some of you might've guessed our First Day Hike is going to look a little different this year. Our staff will not be leading any hikes, but we did come up with three self-guided options for you and your family to do while on the trails! You can grab these at the start of the Orange Trail on January 1st. We hope you enjoy! Have a healthy and safe New Year!

On September 29th Brian Paquin and our Park Manager Laura Smith found an injured juvenile bald eagle on the ground at the south end of the Island. They immediately contacted the Department of Environmental Conservation who referred us to North Country Wild Care. North Country Wild Care estimated the eagle to be less than a year old. The juvenile was brought to the Veterinarian for testing and was diagnosed with multiple parasites. After weeks of rehabilitation Kevin the eag...le (who was actually a female but named before that knowledge was acquired as a Disney’s Up reference) was released back at Schodack on Friday. Shortly after perching in a nearby tree, 2 adult bald eagles came over to check on her and she eventually followed in the same direction a little while later. She made a full recovery from parasites and was banded with a state and a federal band to track in the future. See more
