As a trauma therapist, here is what I see in this particular stream of protests.... people reacting to situations or ideas of which they are terrified. People are in fight-mode against something that scares them. This is a trauma response. A natural response. We must have fear to be able to defend ourselves since we don't naturally possess tough skin or fangs or claws. But we must recognize fear for what it is, and use our Right Mind to work towards a resolution within oursel...ves. It's not easy to do!!!! I know this sounds very cliche now, but the best way is to do deeeeep, slow breathing. Bringing the breath all the way down to the lower lobes of the lungs- this sends signals to the brain to calm the reactive responses. Deep breathing expands and contracts the diaphragm, which in turn massages the organs, and works with the vagus nerve to calm your body down, which will then help the mind calm down. Again, these instructions are easily written, but when someone is in a reactive state, this requires focus and perseverance. Which is why it is best to practice deep breathing every day, even for a few minutes. As I'm writing this, I'm practicing deep breathing. Try it. Right now.... Deeep slow inhale, hold, deeep slow exhale. Do this at least 5 times. Check in with your body. How does it feel now? How is your mind? The calmer you are, the less reactive you are, the better decisions you can make. Peace and stay healthy! See more

With the pandemic continuing, I've been noticing how society has been in a collective trauma response, which means there is a wide range of reactions. The basic 4 are fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. I will be exploring with you how to handle your own trauma responses, other people's responses, and coping skills..... Stay well and in peace.
