Utagawa Yoshiharu (1828-1888) Croue Soulie [The French Great Circus], woodblock triptych, 1871 More info: https://www.scholten-japanese-art.com/printsV.php... While this may seem like a nod to the current circus happening here in the U.S. it's actually a depiction of circus that French equestrian, Louis Soullier, brought to Japan in 1871, opening on August 8th in Yokohama. Unlike his earlier circus counterpart Professor Risley, whose troupe in 1864 had been confined to only staging performances in Yokohama , Soullier was able to obtain permission to perform on grounds at the Yasakuni Shrine in Tokyo in December 1871 to great acclaim. #woodblockprint #japaneseart #ukiyoe

We'd like to introduce our newest team member at Scholten Japanese Art. His name is Bandit and we are very pleased to have him on board! His main job right now is to look as cute as he can (and sometimes cause a little bit of mischief - hence the name, Bandit), and he's doing a great job of that in front of this painting by Ogata Gekko, "The Flowered Hat Dance" (ca. late 1890s) ... Available (the painting that is.....not Bandit): https://www.scholten-japanese-art.com/printsV.php
