Here’s a question! Let’s start with a 5W-30 motor oil. The first number (5W) is the viscosity rating or thickness when cold, the second (30) is the rating when ...it’s hot. The higher the number, the thicker the oil at that temperature point. So does that mean as the oil gets hotter, it gets thicker? Nope other way around! Motor oil gets thinner as it’s heated, but to prevent it from getting too thin at higher temperatures, additives (viscosity modifiers) are used so that it behaves like a thicker grade oil at higher temps. It’s still thinner with heat, it’s just you know, less thin. Generally speaking, you start with a base oil that provides the cold rating, and then use viscosity index improvers to set the hot temperature performance. The lower the first number, the better the oil will pump and flow at cold startups. This is a good thing, and not an indication that it won’t have a thick enough viscosity for protection at higher temperatures. As always, use what’s recommended by your car manufacturer. The engine has been tested & validated from the factory for durability, efficiency and oil consumption using that specific oil grade.
