Today, we look at a newly-unveiled work from 2016 by Guild member Sarah Haviland (@s_haviland) entitled What the Eagle Saw (Eagle Bench). Haviland’s new work is a fully-functional bench, located at the Hammond Museum & Japanese Stroll Garden in North Salem, New York. This utilitarian piece is made of powder-coated fabricated steel; a testament to the craftsmanship of Haviland. Beacon, NY-based welder Herman Roggerman helped out with the fabrication of the work. ... In addition to the bench being on display, Haviland will be exhibiting her solo work at the Hammond. Her exhibition entitled Becoming a Bird focuses on her primarily wire and mixed media on the subject of mythical and local birds. The exhibit opens on July 10th, with a reception from 1 PM to 3 PM. . . . . . #sculptorsguild #nyc #nycarts #nycartscene #nycartists #nycsculpture #nycsculptor #sculpture #sculptorsofinstagram #moma #whitneycollection

A look at Louise Nevelson’s Sky Cathedral, created in 1958 out of painted wood Nevelson a former member of the guild used old scraps and wooden boxes to create this famous work, using black paint to unify the piece. Nevelson said when explaining her love for the color black: When I fell in love with black, it contained all color. It wasn’t a negation of color. It was an acceptance. Because black encompasses all colors. ... Today, we look at the most famous work of former Guild member Louise Bourgeois, a French-born American sculptor Spider, created in the mid-1990s from bronze, silver nitrate, brown patina and granite, is a 15-foot tall creation of quite literally a spider. Bourgeois’ Spider has been all over the world, from San Francisco to São Paulo, and typically comes with a large cage surrounding the work. ... Bourgeois says that this work is symbolic of motherhood inspired by the safety she felt from her mother. It is one of dozens of Spiders that Bourgeois created. . . . #sculptorsguild #nycart #nyc #nycartists #nycsculpture #nycsculptors #sculptureart #sculptorsofinstagram

Today, we look at the catalog from the 1981 Sculpture in the Garden show at the New York Botanical Garden This show was the Guild’s 54th exhibition, and its 12th outdoor show. There were over 130 works that explored the relationship of nature, space and art itself. Renata M. Schwebel Guild president at the the time said in the her opening statement: Sculpture is unique among the visual arts in that it can be enjoyed anywhere... It can strive to dominate the landscap...e, or nestle snugly in a child’s palm. With a heavy heart, we look back at internationally-recognized guild member Lin Emery, who passed away at the age of 94 last week. Born in New York City in 1926, Emery began sculpting at the age of 21 while living in Paris, France. She studied under Russian sculptor, Ossip Zadkine during her time in the French capital. In 1945, Emery moved to New Orleans, Louisiana where she opened up a shop that sold oyster tongs. ... She became known for her kinetic sculptures, which she began experimenting with in 1954. In the 1970s, Emery was able to figure out how to make her sculptures move, truly solidifying her style as a sculptor. Emery has exhibited her work worldwide and is the recipient of countless prestigious art awards.

JOIN US for the SG Artist Talks series MILLER OPIE Monday 11/2 at 6pm EST! My work explores and exorcises my life-altering experiences that began in 2009 when I learned that I had several benign tumors that were destroying my jawbone. Over three years of surgeries and procedures have inspired me to intimately explore beauty, decay and fragility. I have had a life long passion and obsession for collecting bones, shells and other natural objects. Working with found organic m...aterials allows me the thrill of the hunt, the experience of discovery and the joy of combining and manipulating shapes. The objects I create investigate how beauty is defined through mortality and rejuvenation. JOIN US for the SG Artist Talks series PHIL LISTENGART Monday 10/19 at 6pm EST! It seems to me that there are two kinds of beautyretinal, or that which pleases the eye, and trueness, that is, philosophical or meaningful portrayals which strike and appeal to the psyche or intellect. This has been the beam which illuminated the path of my artistic life. Work by Elizabeth Miller McCue from the SG virtual exhibition Metalworks: Matter & Space. Throughout every season this landscape of rolling hills, lush woods, multi-hued broad pastures and the slowly flowing Delaware River is breathtaking. Touch the River that carved through the landscape, and you are once joined to its opposite shore. Plunge into the silence of the woods and you are filled with enchantment, the canopy a cathedral. The woods are a sanctuary, a shelter. ...Its branches are arms, embracing us; its crown of leaves enveloping like hands. Here we bear witness to the natural cycle of renewal and rest. Work by Janet Rutkowski from the SG virtual exhibition Metalworks: Matter & Space. Great art, whether it be visual, sculptural, functional or audio, has a presence, a spirit which it truly felt. I seek to incorporate that presence, that spirit into every piece I create. Art is an unfounded religion whose inspiration comes from a divine source. The power is within each of us, and we should use it in everything we do, in all walks of life. It is the power of transformation. T...ransformation of the mundane into the divine. Work by Darryl Lauster from the SG virtual exhibition Metalworks: Matter & Space. "My work investigates American history and contemporary culture. Work by Conrad Levensen from the SG virtual exhibition Metalworks: Matter & Space. Conrad Levenson is an artist, architect, collector and recycler. Mr. Levenson continues, in his own way, the tradition of those sculptors who chose to work with scraps and discards, appreciating and exploring their potential for artistic expression.
