Here in Western New York we are once again heading into tighter regulations because of covid spikes , daylight is diminishing as we enter the darkest time of th...e year. The warmth of seasonal celebrations are dimmed down as we are asked to not gather. Wonderful opportunity to connect to our inner light ! Allowing the loss and the sadness AND looking for light: what nurtures your soul ? My daily practice nurtures me. If YOU want to build your mindfulness and spiritual practice when would be a better time than now? That is why I am taking my MaLa course online now: The eight tenets of Mindfulness starting on December 4th. We meet online every two weeks. We will explore mindfulness from many different perspectives and you will get audio and printed instructions to build your practice one block at the time. You will get powerful reflection questions to unearth your intentions and articulate your values. You will have the support of your peers as you walk this path and much more. Let’s acknowledge darkness and connect to light, they are both needed. JULY NEWSLETTER Stepping into our unique power and wisdom and when anger is a useful force for action. I recently went to a weekend retreat called WISDOM RISING... with Buddhist Teacher Lama Tsultrim Allione and Yoga Teacher Shiva Rea. It was a powerful weekend full of insights and awakenings. To experience Buddhist and Yogic Teachings \weaved together in a uniquely feminine way was beautiful and very affirming in my quest to connect to uniquely femminine contemplative paths. Many moments of delight, laughter and insight happen when women gather learn and share in a container of deep acceptance and empowerment. The main gift for me was the validation of the quality of the " fierce femminine " that both Shiva Rea and Lama Tsultrim Allione embodied together with an exquisite warmth. Lama Tsultrim Allione talked about how there is lack of role models who embody the fierce aspect of the feminine and how as women we are so hesitant to own that power that comes from anger. This last week as so many of us watched in horror as young children were separated from their mother as part of a new immigration policy I felt anger as very palpable and important emotion in me, the people around me and in the media. That fierceness that comes in the face of deep injustices is rising all around us.Much comes deep down from the cellular memory of women who know deep down know how it feels to be disempowered and crushed. More and more women are allowing that anger to rise, express and transmute into non aggressive action. This is particularly apparent in the "me too" movement, the women's marches of this last year and in the amount of women that have decided to run for political office fueled by outrage and a protective force. Anger can be a violent destructive force and it 's healthy expression can be a motivator for change and action. The women marches that I participated in over the last year were cheerful, inspired and peaceful yet sparked from a feeling of fierceness that called to action. When anger is recognized and then held in the cauldron of practice it can be transformed into wisdom and skillful action. Lama Allione's book is called "Wisdom Rising" and there are some helpful guidelines about the process of connecting and transmuting anger. I too in my own practice am allowing myself to connect to anger. This feels raw, risky and vulnerable . So many times as women we are told to be gentle, pleasant and yielding. The exploration is now about how to use our practices to leverage on the powerful aspects of anger instead of the destructive ones. Chanting, dancing and movement, deep breathing and unconditionally being present to what arises in our meditation practice helps to transform anger into an energy that feels creative, juicy and immensely liberating. So in this summer season of Yang ( heat, power, willful action) let's honor the wisdom of anger as a motivating force for change, because only when anger is suppressed it becomes violent, destructive and toxic. Let's find a way to feel it and then run, chant, dance or do many sun salutations and then sit quietly and allow guidance to emerge from our deep and wise self on how to take skillful action and how to gather the courage to take action where it is needed. Anti depressants are a powerful and amazing medicine in some cases. They can save lives. For those of you who have this experience, please know that I am full...y supportive and grateful for the power of these medicines and thepositive impact that anti depressant/ anxiety can have. But this is only one side of the coin. A lot of times they are prescribed too hastily and without the awareness of all the consequences, addiction being the most dangerous, by hurried and overworked physicians. I am personally familiar with depression : when I was nineteen I went through a deep and long depression. I walked ( maybe a better word would be " stumbled through ") that painful path with the help of an excellent counselor, journaling, expressing myself through art and spending time in nature. Not having the responsibility of work or a family allowed me to take time out to tend to my hurting soul. (I realize that in other moments in our lives that is not available) More importantly though I was given a context by my therapist that depression may be a deep inner calling that needs to be listened to. I did and went through a long and winding road of inquiry, self discovery and transformation. I emerged from those years deeply changed: more aware, with a more authentic voice, more compassionate. I would not trade that experience for anything. In regards to highly sensitive persons : their emotional life is more intense and their baseline of emotional intensity may be different than the non- highly sensitive population; these intense feelings then may be erroneously diagnosed by a physician as " out of normal range" and therefore medicated. There is also, in my opinion, the over- prescribed and unhealthy pressure of always " thinking positive". We have created in our fast and aggressive consumer culture a stigma of not being bouncy, smiling, strong, resilient, motivated etc, all the time. We all know that there is suffering in ourselves and in the world. Accepting our vulnerability and our sadness is one of our essential expressions of humanity. Not only that, it is a healthy response to feel that suffering. I believe that the exploitation of nature and animals is happening in part because we are becoming more and more desensitized , distracted and numb. The problem is that the dominant culture often makes feelings of suffering " wrong". We " should" be happy..........We need tools to meet suffering! I have found that some contemplative practices are effective tools..There is not one practice, but there are many different practices that an experienced contemplative educator can recommend to a client in crisis who is looking for alternative or additional help to medication. Hopefully over time contemplative practices will gain more traction and create a healthier and more creative context and framework for feelings of anxiety and depression. Tools that do not only aide our own healing, but aide the healing of the immediate environment around us. When we heal ourselves we contribute to healing our immediate environment. See more

APRIL NEWSLETTER & CLASS SCHEDULE The Importance of a Pause I had the fortune of spending the last few weeks in San Miguel de Allende, my second home, an almost... 500 year old town at the very center of Mexico on a high plateau.Surrounded by vibrant colors, awe inspiring architecture, magical court yards and blooming plants with the backdrop of a joyful symphony of birdsong and mild spring temperatures I fell into a different space. Let me rephrase that :I committed to "fall into a different space".I realized that to " fall into a different space" requires not only the right place and availability of time, but also takes some skillful means and intention. Pausing requires the resetting of the inner compass to allow new rhythms and spaces to emerge. My intentions included : To quiet my planning mind: Not making plans other than committing to my morning contemplative practiceallowed me to meander into the day and open to what spontaneously arose: a leisurely chat with a neighbor ( also due to my very tentative Spanish skills:); spontaneously going down a street never explored before and find a beautiful mural, sitting on a bench and watch egrets above me collecting branches making their spring nests...... Take vey few photographs and not buy things (unless truly necessary) One of the contemplative practices that I like to connect to is to notice the " the grasping mind" and staying with the awareness of impermanence. Enjoying a beautiful view or object does not mean that I need to own it ( buy it) or hang on to it ( photograph it).... Reduce my wardrobe: opening a closet that contains less than 10 pieces makes the process of getting dressed simple and easy. These intentions within the space of being on vacation allowed me to " fall into a different place". If I were to describe the main quality of that" place " I would have to say that it mainly meant being present, open and connected. These qualities brought about many moments of pure joyfulness and gratitude. Now as I am preparing to head back north I feel deeply nourished and rested. When we are immersed in our routine of work, home and family life these pauses are more elusive and harder to come by. We may want to meander , but inevitably may be pressured by our sense of duty and urgency as we go about our tasks. Attending contemplative classes can offer a space and opportunity to pause: : we are reminded that resting, opening and connecting are available if we do take the time to enter spaces that facilitate these qualities. It is my sincere hope that you will be able to find some of these qualities in one of the classes that I offer this spring. Thank you. UPCOMING SPRING AND SUMMER CLASSES NEW!!! Just had space open up for two more amazing women to join us for the upcoming all women's retreat in Sedona, AZ. If you're ready to drop some worn out baggage, shed some old skin, get off the wheel of guilt and sacrifice, and take the reins of your life back, then this is for you! Will 2018 be another year of the same old sh*t or will it be the year that you free yourself, claim your power, and take your place in the world? You can do it! The time is NOW!... There's never going to be a neat and tidy time for radical transformation. There’s always going to be something or someone which is the reason why you can't. Something will always be in the way, someone coming to visit, someone leaving, someone needing something from you, the weather, the football game, your mother, your daughter, your son, your husband. Whatever it is, there will always be something saying Wait! This isn’t right! Do it later. Not now. Now is not a good time. Now is bad..... but the truth is that the need for radical transformation always comes in times when we are externally being pulled in many directions. That's the nature of it. So, if you need a push this is it! It's just one week in your life, but it's one week that has the power to completely transform and change the way you see yourself and the world around you. I have opened up sometime in my schedule over the next couple of days to offer you a free 20 min. consultation to help you get clarity on an issue or to see it this retreat is right for you. Contact [email protected] We reserve the right to blow the lid off your expectations!
