SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8th IS THE DEADLINE FOR COMMENTS! YOUR HELP IS NEEDED We are not winning the letter-writing campaign because many of you are not writing! NYS D...EC proposes Extending the Deer Hunting Season in the Southern Zone into Christmas Week! One less week to ride! It appears that this year many people will be riding who have not ridden in the last few years. With good snow, this will be a banner year for snowmobiling in NY. Each year we seem to be fighting for access to land for snowmobiling. Our landowners have been great, selflessly opening up their property for our riding enjoyment. But each year many of those landowners sell their property and landowner education starts new. For decades, the NY Snowmobile Clubs and NYSSA have been pressing riders to stay off of the trail system until the hunting seasons are over. Generally, that season ends around Dec. 20th. Now DEC has developed a proposed regulation that will add another week to the deer hunting season for bowhunting and muzzle loading. The longbow and muzzle loading seasons would be extended from Dec 26th through January 1 in the entire Southern Zone (generally everywhere south of the Thruway and some areas north of it, and south of Lake Ontario). We have until November 8th to submit public comments on this regulation change. So far, the hunting community has generated many more letters than the snowmobile community. This probably happened because the DEC stated that there was no conflict with snowmobiling. But there IS a big conflict with snowmobiling as most landowners do not want the two uses on their property at the same time. Thank you to the fifty NYSSA members who copied me on their email or letter to DEC. However, if fifty letters is all we can generate from our 50,000+ memberships, I doubt that DEC will take us seriously. You can find a full copy of the regulation link: https://www.dec.ny.gov/press/121333.html . You can also find NYSSA's comprehensive comments on our webpage. Feel free to borrow from these comments and let the DEC know this is not a good idea. Write to: Jeremy Hurst, Division of Fish and Wildlife, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY, 12233, [email protected] and if you would like, send a copy of your letter to NYSSA, PO Box 740, Central Square, NY 13036 or email a copy of your letter to [email protected] . Thank you for writing the DEC and thank you again for your generous support of snowmobiling.
