A #Covid19 vaccine does not provide full or immediate protection, which means it's still possible to get infected and test positive for the virus. Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts did. He tested positive after he got his second dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Hall of Fame basketball coach Rick Pitino, who coaches the men's team at Iona College in New York, also tested positive after getting his first dose. They could have tested positive for a few reasons. There's a... lag between vaccination and protection. It takes a few days to a few weeks for the vaccine to work, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You could test positive before the vaccine kicked in. "It takes a while for the immune response to develop." said Dr. Robert Salata, director of University Hospitals Roe Green Center for Travel Medicine & Global Health in Cleveland. The first dose may provide some protection, but as the Moderna CEO, Stephane Bancel said Monday "but we really just don't have any data to prove that at this point."

How Scientists Shot Down Cancer’s ‘Death Star’. No drug could touch a quivering protein implicated in a variety of tumors. Then one chemist saw an opening. After 40 years of effort, researchers have finally succeeded in switching off one of the most common cancer-causing genetic mutations in the human body. The finding promises to improve treatment for thousands of patients with lung and colorectal cancer, and may point the way to a new generation of drugs for cancers that re...sist treatment. The finding has already led to a new medication, sotorasib, by the drugmaker Amgen. Other companies are close behind with their own versions. Amgen tested its drug in patients with the most common type of lung cancer, called non-small cell cancer. The disease is diagnosed in 228,000 Americans a year, and for most patients in the advanced stages, there is no cure. The new drug attacks a cancer-causing mutation, known as KRAS G12C, that occurs in 13 percent of these patients, almost all of whom are current or former smokers. Sotorasib made the cancers shrink significantly in patients with the mutation, Amgen reported last week at the World Conference on Lung Cancer.

An 'idiot' who's trained 'like a dog': Marjorie Taylor Greene mocked Parkland survivor in unearthed video. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., mocked a Florida school shooting survivor as an "idiot" who "only talks when he is scripted" in a 2019 interview with a Georgia gun group, according to a previously unreported video obtained by NBC News. "He is very trained. He's like a dog. He's completely trained," Greene said of the survivor, David Hogg, now 20, in an interview with... Georgia Gun Owners Inc. in April 2019, less than two years before she was elected to Congress. Videos of Greene, a freshman Republican, berating Hogg in Washington surfaced last week after she was appointed to the House Education and Labor Committee. House Democrats are pushing to bar her from serving on any committees, citing in part her previous statements suggesting that the shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, were hoaxes. Seventeen people were killed in Parkland in February 2018, and 26 people were killed in Newtown in December 2012.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Sexual Assault Revelation Isn’t the Story. On Monday night, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spent an hour and a half speaking on Instagram Live about a deeply personal traumatic experience she’d recently had. The subject of her talk was the Jan. 6 attack on the Nation’s Capitol, but headlines about her remarks had a different focus: Ocasio-Cortez Says She Is a Sexual Assault Survivor, the New York Times reported. In recounting of Capitol riots, Oca...sio-Cortez reveals she is a sexual assault survivor, said CBS News. New York Magazine’s headline was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: ‘I’m a Survivor of Sexual Assault. CNN: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she’s a survivor of sexual assault while describing trauma of Capitol insurrection. The reporting mentioned above doesn’t deliver much more information beyond the headlines about Ocasio-Cortez’s experience with sexual assault, because she didn’t provide it. The reference to the experience was a comparatively minuscule part of her monologuea minute or two of nearly 90 minutes on air. She was explicit that she was sharing this fact because she wanted to talk about the trauma of what had happened to her more recently, and she understands that trauma is cumulative. She also made a compelling comparison between the way abusers treat their victims, and the way her Republican colleagues have responded to the events of Jan. 6th. These people are just trying to tell us, ‘it’s not a big deal,’ and they’re trying to say ‘you’re making too big a deal over it,’ Ocasio-Cortez said, of her Republican colleagues trying to minimize what happened. These are tactics of abusers, or rather, these are the tactics that abusers use. So when I see this happen, how I feel, and how I felt, was ‘not again.’ But anyone who watched the full Instagram Live could tell you that the point of the event was not for AOC to explore her personal history of sexual trauma. It was for her to share her own play-by-play of the insurrection, to explain why she felt her life was threatened multiple times over the course of the day, and to articulate how her previous life experience informed her response to that event. So why did so many news organizations frame their stories around Ocasio-Cortez’s admission that she had been sexual assaulted?
