As a disabled woman, I have gotten used to living in a world and in a society that isn’t built for me. For most of my life, I have had to fit in places, physically, mentally, intellectually. When you’re disabled, you learn to adapt, to make things work for you that were never intended to be for you at all. When I lost the ability to stand a few years ago, I had to learn a whole new aspect of my physical disability: getting dressed while sitting down. It is not easy. Seriou...sly, the next Ice Bucket Challenge should be able-bodied people pulling up a pair of jeans while sitting down. I didn’t have anyone to teach me how to do this. So I did what I’ve done my whole life: I adapted. Sometimes that adaptation led to humiliating moments, like getting so frustrated I said fuck it and ended up on my knees in a public bathroom, desperately trying to pull my jeans up. It’s embarrassing, and definitely disgusting, another tick in the column of degrading disability moments. Thankfully, more adaptive clothing is available now, including Slick Chicks. When a company like Slick Chicks comes along, with a product specifically designed for me, for disabled women everywhere, it’s nearly unbelievable. Suddenly, I am seen. It makes something as ordinary as underwear feel extraordinary. Slick Chicks designs underwear that fasten at the sides, making it so much easier to get dressed in a seated position. But they are more than their product. They connect disabled women with each other. They allow us to be visible, both by creating something meant just for us, and by sharing our stories. Living with a disability can feel isolating, but companies like Slick Chicks make me feel a little less alone. If you’re a disabled person with tips and tricks for dressing in a seated position, share them in the comments! Let’s connect with each other and make life just a little easier. @monicaenglethomas . By @wheelchair_rapunzel Disability is not the enemy, the ableist framework that dictates our view of disability is the enemy. Ableism dictates how I view myself and my disability.... It also dictates how people view me. We live in a world where disability is a secret that we tuck away. That we hide. Because it’s too different. Because we see disability as a flaw. So, the only time we unveil the secret is when it benefits the masses: able-bodied folk. Disability is okay to show when it makes us feel good. When we use it for inspiration porn. When we see a disabled person overcoming their disability. Here’s the the real secret: you can’t overcome disability. Because disability is not the problem ableism is. We position disability as inspirational and we show people overcoming their disability by doing every day activities because it’s more comfortable. More palatable. By continuing this narrative, we can’t focus on the real problem: ableism. Next time you see a disabled person doing something that isn’t extraordinary eating, shopping, doing a keg stand ask yourself why you see it as inspirational. Unpack that. It’s your internalized ableism speaking to you. And that’s okay, we all carry some amount of ableism with us. If we make an effort to allow actually disabled voices speak over the ableism that surrounds us, we are on our way. On our way to living in an anti-ableist world . Meet our brand ambassador @charlotteamylouise - So most people don’t know this.. but because Ehlers Danlos affects the joints (at least), my right hip ‘pops’ out every time I bend my right leg 90 degrees. It’s not a full dislocation as it always ‘pops’ straight back in but it is VERY painful. This is called a partial dislocation - or a subluxation. It happens every time I walk up a stair (not stairS - every single step I take up A stair). It happens when I walk up hills. And... it happens when I put my knickers on! Because this happens a lot every single day, I’ve kinda learned to live with it. Sure, it is painful and I do try to avoid it if I can (ie. I take escalators or lifts when I can and I use my trusty walking stick on the very bad days!). BUT it’s so nice when I don’t have to put myself through it. So when @slickchicksonline asked if I wanted to try their underwear, of course I said yes! They arrived the other day and I’m absolutely in love they do up in the same way that bras do with hooks and clasps and you can do them up both sides! These are amazing if you have any mobility issues with your legs and/or hips etc and they are a DREAM to wear - so comfy! They have a variety of styles, including a thong and a high waisted pair (two styles I wear the most). It’s something a lot of people don’t think about when it comes to disabilities and accessibility; clothing and underwear. It seems like such a little thing. But it’s a basic human necessity and when it’s done right, it makes ALL the difference to a person’s pain levels, dignity and independence. Every disabled person wears clothes but very few clothes are actually suitable for those with various disabilities! . Alt text: Charlotte standing.
