Family Planning During a Pandemic For communities wanting family planning - outreach and clinic administration continued and we met new demand by adding Bubugo Bulongo... village. Though gatherings of six or more were banned during lockdown, the 3 family planning outreach teams were allowed to continue community work. This is critical as five times more family planning occurs in outreaches than at the clinic. In 2020 SPH provided longterm family planning for more than 4,000 women. Thank you to all our dedicated teams! A very common problem we see at the clinic quite often: chronic osteomyelitis. This lady was found by our head river Joseph during a family planning outreach. She has really struggled to find effective treatment for her condition. The good news is that we can help this lady and she is undergoing treatment now!... #SoftPowerHealth #MukagwaTwekembe #JessieStone #osteomyelitis

A patient with spina bifida Dennis is a young patient with spina bifida, and has been living with infected pressures sores due to very poor living conditions and lack of education at home about managing his wounds. In Dennis’s case, a small intervention of wound care education, a proper mattress, mosquito net and mattress cover along with soap allows Dennis and his family to help Dennis get and stay well. Here are Dennis and his mother with his before and after bed at home in Mayuge district. #SoftPowerHealth #JessieStone #MukagwaTwekembe #Malaria

Unfortunately we have got sad news regarding our patient Lambert. He died on wednesday while being medically and nutritionally managed at the Uganda Heart Institute. We were trying to get him ready and strong enough to tolerate the surgery but his heart decompensated for the final time. It is a really sad story because we were so close! ... Lambert is representative of a huge population of Ugandans that have rheumatic heart disease and die because they cannot get valve replacement surgery soon enough! Life expectancy decreases with every single cardiac decompensation, so the sooner surgery can be scheduled, the better the chances for success are. Our thoughts are with Lamberts family! Good news for our patient Lambert! One of our Rheumatic Heart Disease patient, Lambert, who is now 19 years old and has spent 2 years waiting for help while in fulminant congestive heart failure due to valvular disease has been able to be scheduled for valve replacement surgery at the Uganda Heart Institute! Thanks to a collaborative effort that includes donation to cover the cost of the surgery by a private donor, the Widgeon Point Foundation to Soft Power Health as well as ...donation of the heart valve itself by Dr. Craig Sable and his group. We look forward to future preventative health work with Dr. Sable and Edwards - we can do a lot in that area that will help save lives and prevent disease! Emergency Food Distribution for Starving People during Covid19 Lockkdown Another unanticipated impact from the pandemic is that many Ugandans are going hungry, and in some cases starving. The most vulnerable have been especially hard hit by the pandemic. As most Ugandans live hand to mouth on a daily wage, no work means no income and thus no ability to buy food during the lockdown. This has created an enormous challenge: hunger and starvation for Ugandans and their families.... Additionally, the lockdown hit during the height of the growing season and rural communities were prevented from harvesting their own gardens. In response to this dire situation, Soft Power Health began supplying emergency food aid to help those most in need. Fortunately, we were able to raise grant money for this special service. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the Gould Family Foundation and International Rivers for their support of this initiative! #JessieStone #MukagwaTwekembe #Starvation #covid19 #SoftPowerHealth #GouldFamilyFoundation See more

Mosquito Net Delivery Cause for celebration, our shipment of 14,000 Real Relief Mosquito Nets arrived yesterday to the clinic! As malaria has been consistently in the top three diseases we have been treating since the lockdown began and malaria remains the biggest infectious disease killer, the nets arrival was not a moment too soon! Clinic getting busier The clinic is getting slowly busier as patients continue to travel on foot seeking treatment. Public transport is still banned. No cases of corona have been diagnosed and referred to date at the clinic. The number one disease we are treating is malaria which is life ending if untreated, though high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, peptic ulcer disease and bacterial infections are also very common. Thanks to all Soft Power Health staff for thei...r good work taking care of the patients and communities! Here are a few pictures from last week: #SoftPowerHealth #JessieStone #MukagwaTwekembe

Clinic as busy as ever! While confirmed corona cases remain low in Uganda though the truth of corona's true infectious presence remains a mystery due to limited testing, the clinic continues to be busy on a daily basis treating known deadly and life altering diseases such as malaria, schistosomiasis, bacterial infections and high blood pressure. In fact, malaria has been the number one disease we are treating on a daily basis consistently since the lockdown began! Since then..., we have not referred a single patient for follow up on corona infection to Jinja hospital. Referral is based on symptoms only with a temperature of 38C or higher. Very interesting! Thank you to the dedicated staff of Soft Power Health for keeping up the good work caring for these patients! #SocialDistancing #SoftPowerHealth #JessieStone #MukagwaTwekembe #Covid19 See more
