As followers of Jesus Christ, we condemn the threats and acts of violence we have witnessed this week in places where our communities worship, shop and reside. ...We mourn and pray for those who have been affected by those acts, and especially for those who have lost loved ones at the hands of hatred and violence. We pray for those who carry such hatred in their hearts and see violence as an acceptable response to fear. These last few days it may seem like hatred and violence are prevailing. As followers of Jesus, we must remember his words: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God" (Matthew 5:9). "You have heard it said ‘you should love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:43-44). Through baptism into our community of faith, we have each committed ourselves to live faithfully as disciples of Jesus, no matter the cost. May we have courage to intervene with love, peace and kindness when confronted with hatred and violence.
