"Did You Know...?" Week of December 2, 2013 The holiday season is upon us, ladies!... (In case you hadn't already figured THAT one out!) With all of the running around we do, we deny ourselves. This, in conjunction with trying to do everything for everyone with very little time, can trigger depression and anxiety. Below is a link from WomensHealth.gov; a story about one woman's battle with depression and how she is beating an illness that affects over 15 million Americans - at a rate of at least twice as many women than men. Take care of YOU this holiday season, too! http://www.womenshealth.gov/news/spotlights/2013/8.html

"Did You Know...?" Week of November 11, 2013 We all assume that if teenagers are given condoms that they'll have more sex. Not necessarily true. But when they DO, they'll certainly be safer!... Whether or not anyone adopts the practice of making condoms more easily accessible to teens remains to be seen. But it's our responsibility as parents AND as professionals to talk to teenagers about having safe sex, and if they won't use condoms then they should consider abstinence. These are the ONLY two ways to reduce the spread of STDs!!! http://www.nbcnews.com//condoms-should-be-more-available-t

"Did You Know...? Week of September 30, 2013 October is national Domestic Violence Awareness Month. On Monday October 7, 2013 we will celebrate the Day of Unity. From www.icadvinc.org:... Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from the Day of Unity in October 1981 conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to a range of activities conducted at the local, state, and national levels. The activities conducted were as varied and diverse as the program sponsors but had common themes: mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence. In October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. That same year marks the initiation of the first national domestic violence toll-free hotline. In 1989 the U.S. Congress passed Public Law 101-112 designating October of that year as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Such legislation has passed every year since with NCADV providing key leadership in this effort. Each year, the Day of Unity is celebrated the first Monday of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Adapted from the 1996 Domestic Violence Awareness Month Resource Manual of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. We need to educate our children about domestic abuse and especially that violence can occur with teenagers as well! Let's all celebrate the survivors and remember the victims.

"Did You Know...?" So many of us are struggling financially. Access to quality healthcare, and specifically the sky-high costs of health insurance have been an issue for millions of us for years, regardless of our income! With the national Health Insurance Exchanges opening up October 1, Good Morning America this morning profiled an article by the people at Prevention Magazine. The piece outlines many of the good things for women that will come out of the Affordable Care Act.... Although not perfect, the Affordable Care Act is estimated to help 19 MILLION WOMEN gain access to health insurance at much more affordable rates, and in turn better healthcare. This may prevent millions of dollars in hospital and intensive care costs down the road. Read here to see how the ACA may affect you! http://gma.yahoo.com/affordable-care-act-means-102049547--a
