As communicators, we subconciously gather a lot of information by watching the face and mouth of the people we interact with. This is even more so for people with hearing loss, who use these cues to a greater extent. Hearing loss can be particularly difficult to deal with when folks wear masks that cover their face and mouth., and through which voices/speech is muffled. Check out suggestions from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association for helpful hints! https://www.asha.org//covid-19-and-hearing-loss-in-adults/

During C-19 pandemic, many of our clients/patients have continued essential evaluation and treatment services via Teleservices with Speech & Communication Services. However, some have preferred to wait to re-start in-person visits at our office. GOOD NEWS! As of June 15th, 2020, we will be re-opening our doors (with prescribed precautions) for our new and pre-existing clients! The approaching holidays bring close family and friends and meals together. Eating together is an important social time, though for those with dysphagia (swallowing/eating disorders), the holidays can bring challenges, anxiety, and even fear of aspiration when faced with foods which can be difficult or unmanageable. Check out this publication regarding managing the holidays with persons with dysphagia, inlcuding ideas and recipes for those with particular dietary needs: https://med.virginia.edu///2014/06/Parrish-November-14.pdf Feel free to reach out to us at SCS if you feel you would benefit from assessment and treatment for eating and swallowing disorders.
