Grade 3 students integrated their math, literacy, art, science, and social studies skills during an Eco Center residency to more deeply understand indigenous communities’ medicines and foods.
This year’s Technology Reflection Conference took our Middle School students time traveling, as they explored innovative technologies in the future! With the theme of Ethical Design of Tomorrow, the Spence Academic Technology team hosted a design convention to learn about innovative technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, and how they might be used in a school setting.
In honor of Women’s History Month, we salute our founder Clara Spence, who believed in empowering women through education. Since she founded Spence in 1892, welcoming 10 students to a brownstone on West 48th Street, generations of Spence graduates have led transformative lives inspired by her enduring school motto, Not for school but for life we learn. Thank you, Miss Spence. We believe in the strength, intellect and vitality of women.

We are so proud of Spence alum Kerry Washington '94 for hosting the third night of the 2020 Democratic Convention. She opened the evening with a story of having to memorize the preamble of the constitution in eighth grade. Not for school but for life we learn.
Spence alum Jill Furman co-produced the new documentary We are Freestyle Love Supreme, which premiered on Hulu last Friday, July 17. Their brilliance deserves to be seen, and needs to be seen to be believed, said Furman. In these sad and scary times, it feels especially great that this documentary, which celebrates friendship, the creative process, and the importance of art, all with an infectious joy, can be seen by so many.

Spence proudly announces this year’s Margaret Duckett Award recipient: Señora Celinés Pimentel! With a wizard’s mix of great skill, empathy and pure dedication, Celinés has taught Spanish to generations of Spence students. Celinés, we salute your 20 years at Spence and we thank you for always embodying the Spence motto of learning for life. Congratulations! ¡Felicidades! https://www.spenceschool.org/2017---news-detail
The "Flower Flashes," by floral designer Lewis Miller and Irini Arakas Greenbaum ’93, were back in the streets of NYC last week. The New York Times chronicled their overnight campaign in a June 20 article, as they rushed from Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, to SoHo, on to Fort Greene and finally to the cobblestone plaza of Gansevoort Street to create four floral heart installations in one night. Thank you Irini and the Miller team for bringing joy to NYC, particularly during the pandemic and in the wake of the City's new reopening phase.
The Spence School honors the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth. #Juneteenth
"She has the pure heart of an educator, a teacher and a fellow human being...she is a warrior for justice, and always has been." Congratulations, Mme. Michèle Krauthamer, on a 42-year legacy as a beloved educator. We wish you all the best in your retirement, and we thank you for your many wonderful years at Spence.
As the school year comes to an end, please enjoy this salute to Spence students with photos from every grade this year.
Our thanks to the Church of the Heavenly Rest for creating a banner to celebrate the Class of 2020 from neighboring schools.
Chapter 57: Joe comes to the rescue again. "There was no change whatever in Joe. Exactly what he had been in my eyes then, he was in my eyes still! Just as simply faithful, and ever simply right!"
Chapter 55: Wemmick, his castle, the Aged P...and a surprise wedding. What larks!
Chapters 52-54: Pip goes "home" and meets the "nobler Joe" and the loving Biddy. But read carefully...does he yet understand? Then old Orlick returns to do more damage in chapter 53...especially to Pip who is already injured. Is all lost? The "two convicts" meet again in chapter 54, and we have come full circle in many ways. This time Pip understands his feelings for Magwitch: "Please God, I will be as true to you, as you have been to me." Keep reading!
