"Westward Airmail Route" from NY, Cleveland and finally Chicago. This December 18, 1918 Airmail Cover represents the inaugural flight of this service. It was discontinued 18 days later on January 5, 1919 due to the hazardous winter flying conditions which already had claimed the life of one pilot.

ARE THESE NOTES RESPONSIBLE FOR "DIXIE"? No one is certain from where the terms "Dixie" or "Dixieland" come. One theory which has some weight suggests that the Citizen's Bank of Louisiana's banknotes with "DIX" (Fr. Ten) on the reverse may be the main source for the term.

United States Sanitary Commission The U.S. Sanitary Commission was established at the beginning of the Civil War in June 1861 to advise, inquire and aid in the health and general comfort of the troops. Supported by public contributions Sanitary fairs were held to raise money. There were numerous Fairs beginning in 1863 Chicago and later Albany, Boston, Brooklyn, New York, Philadelphia, Springfield MA, and Stamford CT. These fairs raised almost half a billion dollars in to...day's currency. Notable members of the commission included Dorothea Dix, Louisa May Alcott, George Templeton Strong and Fredrick Law Olmstead to name a few. The stamp illustrated here was issued at the New York Metropolitan Sanitary Fair April 4-27, 1864.

"Receive To-morrow's mail today" The slogan of Air Mail Week 1938. In 1938 Postmaster General James Farley conceived of the idea of Air Mail Week May 15 - May 21, marking the 20th anniversary of the US Airmail Service. Citizens were encouraged to send a letter by air mail. It was a resounding success. Small out-of-the-way places became Airmail stops. Pilots donated their time and were deputized for 24 hours to fly one-time air mail routes.... Here is the Sirst Flight From Staten Island May 19, 1938
