Winter's mojo of girth, storage and heftier meals brought in some more complex cases for me to chew. Highlights of the last two months with acupuncture and herbal medicine: turned a blue tongue pink again, eliminated chronic excess fluid in the eyes, stabilized night time racing heart panic attacks , reduced chronic hip and arthritic lumbosacral pains, skin rashes on the mend as well as the anxiety with them, and supported diabetic symptoms of more stable blood sugar,... less fluid output, insomnia, and dryness. What will the spring offerings bring: my investigative cap is on, ears and heart open. In addition, the subway F station outside the office also opened with the most endearing William Wegman mosaics inspiring an inner mona lisa in passing. #fivelementacupuncture #livingwiththeseasons #tcm #herbalmedicine #shanghanlun #balancethepatterns #williamwegman #joyinwinter #monalisasmile #fireintheheart #acupuncturebeatsdepression See more

Spent a weekend at @respiteintheroundnc to descend into a bit more stillness and reflection of what the fall season of NC offers, dropping in for a dose of nature after a hint of wintery snow in NY. We discussed ideas for possible future retreats, the stability of self care rituals, reconnection to ourselves and community, and creating space to promote growth and change. The turning colors is the metal element of decrease and change. Metal rules the lungs and lower intestine.... Each is continually between being full or empty, discerning value, absorbing, protecting, influencing our defenses and immune responses, and negotiates as/for barriers/boundaries. We can nurture our metal element with breathing exercises, clean food/water/air, supplementing with trace minerals, eating softened radishes and steamed greens, making stews, and drinking cups of restorative nervine or aromatic teas including linden or ginger as well as saying no to more, cutting down on clutter, acknowledging feelings of grief and gratitude, reflecting on (in)justice, rejection/acceptance, creating or reducing more or less structure for ourselves, softening rigidity or firming up boundaries. And, of course, these organs can be nurtured and treated deeply through acupuncture or non-insertion modalities. @ Durham, North Carolina See more

Q: How do you sneak a medicinally nutritious bitter melon into your meal? A: By cooking the rainbow. And, I soaked it with a little salt in filtered water before cooking. A great fall lung remedy, bitter melon will help clear the respiratory passages. (But its not spicy like horseradish; it resembles a squashlike cucumber with a kick.) After eating this I expelled that which has been lingering from a summer cold. A plant-forward packed punch! A plant-forward packed lunch... ! This bounty of farmers' market goodies includes : nutrient dense greens named lamb's quarters, yellow bell pep in your step , sauteed red radishes (great lung vegetable as we move into fall season), garlic, end-of-summer-squash with crunchy soft seeds for texture, & farm ripe heirloom tomatoes sauteed in coconut oil w/pinches of fengugreek, turmeric, coriander, & a dash of apple cider vinegar to finish. #cravetherainbow #fiveelementeating #fallseason #metalelement #lung #fiveelementtheory See more

So I unintentionally arrived on this conference trip a day early, sought a quiet beach spot, and swam in the refreshing ocean without regret after some initial resisting to get in or do any of this resting. Lying there with a spine like seaweed on the sand, eventually made aware some habitual shoulder and jaw tension to let go. Slowing that NYC speed of highly driven sympathetic dominance mode (nervous system's activated state and leaning into the parasympathetic 'rest an...d digest' state) = the yin to my yang week. Carving out space for more restorative care has been part of the treatment plan for many of my patients too, and lately they are seeing such improved and longer sustained results, having reached a new baseline. I am pursuing the practice and maintenance of restoration for balance. #physicianhealthyself the shapes & colors of summer before its fall / some so-cal. Turns out I like tropicals in their natural habitat. #plantsnob #noticingbeauty #appreciation #being #livingwiththeseason #fireelement #earthelement #fivelementacupuncture #naturalhealing #supported @ San Diego, California

Very grateful here in NYC to find many options for cooked vegetables as takeout that isn't deep fried or french fries. My favorite dish of all time--aloo gobi--exists here at Minar on 46th near Times Square (and other locations). Aloo Gobi, potato & cauliflower are near carmelized. I encourage some patients and parents to incorporate more vegetables and variety into their diet. When a sweet tooth is at play, my advice is to try some old and new root vegetables by cooking or... roasting them until their natural sweetness blossoms. In a way, this dish fits into that scheme. Years ago women who worked here noticed that my friend from Dehli came in often for takeout for two and did not know how to cook, so one day they invited her into the kitchen and taught her to make these dishes herself. #frenchfriesdonotcountasavegetable #plantforwardmeals #deepfriedcanfryyourenergy #cleaneroils #hotmealsready #choosewiselywithtakeout (dish picture borrowed online).
