Stephens Naphtal Law 28.12.2020

Today we celebrate Human Rights Day because 72 years ago, The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For me, understanding the connection between these universal ideals and modern employment rights is inspiring. It connects us -- modern employees standing up for our rights, employers working to respect rights, and lawyers striving to enforce rights -- to the long and noble endeavor of universal human rights. Thank you to all those who have served. Current and former service members should know about a law named USERRA which gives current service members the right to leave a job for service and return to re employment. The law also prohibits discrimination against past and present members of the uniformed service. If you or someone you know has questions about rights under this law, feel free to contact Stephens Naphtal Law.

Please exercise your right to vote today in the US election if you are eligible and have not done so already! Your vote makes a huge difference in defending and promoting employee, civil, and human rights (which are often the same rights going by different names) across the country as well as in your State and locality.

Today is the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic workers have been so critical in standing up for their own and others’ civil rights. I am particularly in awe of some of my past clients who were brave enough to stand up for their workplace rights (like the right to work free from sexual harassment) despite being undocumented. Did you know that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 applies to all those working in the US no matter their level of work authorization? The law also bars discrimination based on national origin or perceived national origin. To learn more about some of the Hispanic individuals who have championed worker’s rights, check out this PBS feature: https://www.pbs.org//hispanic-heritage-month-spotlight-fi/. Finally, I am proud of my own Mexican heritage!!!

Heading into Labor Day Weekend, take a minute to read about the history of Labor Day (hint: it grew out of some of the worst labor abuses of the Gilded Age, and workers' rising political consciousness in response). On this Labor Day 2020, I am thankful for the hard work of America's workers during this pandemic, and hopeful that we can continue to improve and protect the lives of workers in this country. https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/labor-day-1

Happy 30-year anniversary to the Americans with Disabilities Act, the federal law that helps people with disabilities obtain accommodations in the workplace and in other public places so they are not excluded from participation. I am pleased to litigate under this law. https://www.npr.org//americans-with-disabilities-act-exami
