Still Gardens

for 16 years I tended to a roof garden on the UES. It was the first terrace in NYC that I went up to, bought for and did the seasonal planting for. It was my weekly and over the years I got to know not only it’s owner but Mattie, the doorman and elevator operators and super. It was my favorite job. And it belonged to a wonderful creative man who I was very lucky to have known. At first I was intimidated; being in someone’s penthouse, trying to work quietly and keep the other ...gardens quiet while our client worked at his office inside. Over time I got to know Mr Goldman... that we both had this midwestern grumpiness, that he thought someone should do a book on water-towers of NYC, that he had his favorite tree, a honey locust that he could see from Madison Ave when walking home. He would come out and call for me each week and have a little chat. At one point a few years in he said call me Bill and I said ok Mr Goldman.
