St. Lawrence Land Trust 06.12.2020

Join us for our 6th Annual Tooley Pond Road waterfalls along Tooley Pond Road on Sunday, October 18, hopefully, to catch the end of the fall foliage. Due to the limits of COVID-19 distancing restrictions, we're limiting the size of this year's walk to just 20 participants. Masks will be required the whole time. If you'd like to reserve a space, please RSVP with your number of guests by replying to this post or writing directly to The St. Lawrence Land Trust (stlawlandtrust... @ stlawlandtrust.org) before October 17th. The series of hikes is generally family (but not stroller) friendly, though there are some steeper sections and good walking shoes are recommended. We will drive between short hikes (less than a mile round trip each) to see 3-4 different waterfalls depending on the weather. In these difficult times, we know it's important to remember those who have supported us. We hope you'll join us.

Hart’s Falls couldn’t be more beautiful right now. The graffiti was removed, the new signs are hung and only a handful of garbage to pick up. Thank you to our neighbor Morgan Farr for mowing half the field as part of our management plan. We’ll keep part of the pasture mowed each year, but do it late in the year to give ground-nesting birds and our huge population of monarch butterflies a chance to move on. We hung new kiosk posters today - Adrienne Colley was our summer intern and made the posters and finally got to see Hart’s Falls in person. Please consider a donation this fall (at our website or P.O. Box 684, Canton, NY 13617) to help us keep Hart’s Falls safe, protected and open to the public.

We’ve been so happy to see so many people enjoying Hart’s Falls this summer. However, this has also led to an increase in garbage, fire pits (and garbage), as well as destruction and graffiti by the water. The remaining 100+ year stone wall from the original mill was painted with graffiti in the past month. You’ll see new signs at a Hart’s Falls this week to remind people to pack in and pack out any garbage, and not to make fires or interfere with the historic wall. If you see any issues with garbage or further graffiti (hopefully it can be removed soon) please contact the Land Trust. The property is open to the public, but everyone needs to help us preserve this beautiful land.

One of the responsibilities of the Land Trust is annual monitoring of easements. This week 3 board members got to walk on some beautiful properties (with their owners’ permission). Glenn Johnson and Marty Duffany are pictured here. We saw some fun North Country wildlife too - deer, turkeys and porcupines, oh my!

We had an extraordinary intern, Adrianne Colley, from St. Lawrence University this summer, who did a lot of work for us remotely. One of the last projects she finished was updating and improving our website. Please take a look. There's a downloadable trail map for Hart's Falls, as well as information on all our current projects! Please help us keep Hart's Falls safe and clean and practice appropriate physical distancing while using the area. https://stlawlandtrust.org/
