Thank you to our patient, Julie, for sharing your story and the impact organ donation has had on your life. Register to be an organ donor here! bit.ly/oded2020 #donorday2020 #donatelife ... My name is Julie, and at the relatively young age of 43 my kidneys failed. My dialysis treatments started at a nursing home, because my local dialysis center did not have any room for me. That alone reinforces the need for more organ donation. I switched to peritoneal dialysis from home. The treatment was 9 hours long, every night for 5 years. This meant I could not even tuck my young daughter in at bedtime. As the years continued to pass. I began to wonder if transplant would ever happen. I was starting to lose hope. I even contemplated on ending my dialysis treatment on my own. The very same treatment that was keeping me alive. One night after midnight I received the call. I received the second chance I had hoped for. After my transplant, I returned back to school to receive my high school diploma at the age of 49. After that, I enrolled in college to study criminal justice. Now in 2020, I am living the life I always knew I deserved. My daughter is now fifteen and I am still here to continue to watch her grow. This is all possible due to my donor’s family and their child’s selfless choice to become a donor. Over the last 4 years, the donor family and I have formed an incredible bond. They are at peace knowing their child’s gift was not in vain."
