Great post from @gaithappens Glutes are SO IMPORTANT, I especially love exercises that get your feet and glutes working together the way they should when you are walking Posted @withregram @gaithappens We talk about this all time....that foot is only as stable as the hip that drives it. You can also hear us say, it’s never just a foot problem. When assessing foot function, you must assess hip function. Period. ... Rather than brace the foot and prevent its motion, we have to allow the foot to move and control its motion through proper function Now, there is a time and a place for orthotic therapy. And stay tuned....we got something good brewing to kick off 2021. It will be a collaboration like no other #gaithappens #orthotics #footfunction #strongfeet #barefoot #barefeet #balance #proprioception #neurosensory #neuro #fascia #feeltheground #chiropractic #physicaltherapy #gait #glutes #gluteworkout #shoesoff #foundationsptwny #oneononephysicaltherapy #buffalony #clarenceny #williamsvilleny #eastamherstny #lancasterny See more

We breathe around 20,000 times per day Practicing expanding your lower rib cage and filling your abdomen in all directions upon inhale has many benefits including: reducing stress and pain... expanding core muscles to set them up for a better shortening contraction (think of the rubber band effect, lengthen and load to explode!) contributing to a more active dynamic core which helps the rest of your body to move and feel better increasing pressure in your abdomen which supports your spine when lifting heavy objects massaging other muscles, fascia and organs IF you breathe fully and allow the diaphragm to expand into your lower abdomen which helps to improve circulation and pliability of these areas (psoas is one of the muscles that gets a lovely massage if you breathe diaphragmatically) I invite you to practice breathing this way. Practice while laying on your back with your knees bent. If you aren’t able to expand fully on the inhale you would likely benefit from some techniques to help release your diaphragm. One way to start is with the #coregeousball DM me if you would like info about online learning, group sessions or private physical therapy! #painrelief #diaphragmaticbreathing #oneononephysicaltherapy #tryphysicaltherapyfirst #clarenceny #lancasterny #williamsvilleny #eastamherstny #buffalony #foundationsptwny

Great post from @correcttoes about the negative effects of wearing shoes with arch support all the time...use it or lose it! Good news is you can get the arch muscles stronger and well functioning with practice! Posted @withregram @correcttoes Problems with Arch Support - Use It or Lose It . Artificial arch supports (and other rigid support features) weaken the foot muscles and bones, leaving the individual more susceptible to injury and poor performance. Extra sup...port may help in the short term with pain relief and restoring function, but it ultimately becomes detrimental when used for too long. This is a common theme observed throughout the body, though mostly applies to musculature: . A rigid cast is used to support a broken arm while it heals; but if worn for too long, the arm muscles begin to weaken and atrophy from lack of use. . Laxatives are used to help with bowel movements in people with constipation; but if taken for too long, the intestines can lose muscle and nerve response, leading to dependency. . A sterile environment ensures no interactions with microbial pathogens; but without any microbial interactions, the immune system is unable to develop antibodies to fight off diseases upon exposure. . A sedentary lifestyle isn't physically strenuous, and allows for plenty of reading, relaxing, and socializing; but if sedentary for too long, the risk increases for all causes of mortality, doubling the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity, and increasing the risks of colon cancer, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, lipid disorders, depression, and anxiety. If you've seen Disney's Wall-E, you get the picture. . We use technology to improve performance and make life easier, but sometimes technology allows us to neglect parts of ourselves, and those parts become weakened. In the case of foot archesuse them, strengthen them, and be amazed at your own abilities to be active, mobile, and pain-free. . #oneononephysicaltherapy #buffalony #clarenceny #spreadyourtoes #foothealth #archsupport #atrophy #useitorloseit #flatfeet #overpronation #naturalfoothealth See more

Great post from @thebarefootpodiatrist about the importance of USING all those muscles in your feet! Posted @withregram @thebarefootpodiatrist USE IT OR LOSE IT There are 4 layers of muscle in our feet that when strong are more than capable of supporting, stabilising and moving our feet. ... Each of these muscles play a vital role, which is why it is so important that we spend time out of shoes, using and strengthening them to ensure strong foundations and healthy movement. Most of us are limited in our ability to extend our hips We SHOULD be extending our hips with every step we take When our hips are stiff and don’t extend well, we often extend our low back instead when we walk (our body likes to take the path of LEAST RESISTANCE and it’s often easier just to extend the back!)... In this video I explain this compensation and show a healthy movement pattern you can practice to help you extend better at the hips! This is one of my favorite ways to counteract the negative effects of sitting! If you have a hard time grounding well and feeling your glutes, hamstrings and calves fire when pushing off with that back leg, adding in some Anatomy in Motion foot wedges is TRY THIS RIGHT NOW!!! It’s like 100x better than doing a static hip flexor stretch And let me know what you think! #hipsdontlie #walkthisway #naturalmovement #functionalmovement #tryphysicaltherapyfirst #oneononephysicaltherapy #foundationsphysicaltherapy #clarenceny #williamsvilleny #eastamherstny #lancasterny

Here’s a way to practice keeping your ribs down with a stable core while you flex your shoulders.

Here’s an exercise you can do while laying on the floor with your feet pressing into the wall. The core stabilization helps you to get more shoulder flexion. Once you get good at this you can do with a weight in place of the yoga block!

Foundations PT of WNY 18.10.2020

In this video I explain a common compensation when we lift our arms overhead: we tend to lift our ribs rather than flex our shoulders toward their end range. If we instead keep our ribs down this promotes a more active core and more true shoulder flexion. I will be posting 2 simple exercises to help with this issue next!
