Christmas and Thanksgiving Cactus are blooming this time of year. These cacti are from the Schlumbergia cacti family that hales from the south eastern Atlantic coast of Brazil. They thrive in the wild in shaded, high humid habitat along the southern Atlantic coast. They bloom in the southern hemisphere in spring and in the northern hemisphere, where we keep them as house plants, in the late fall...thus the moniker Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus this variety of cactus hav...e stems that resemble paddle like leaves, while the flowers bloom off of joints and tips..blooms are while, pink, orange, red,purple or yellow. They make a lovely house plant and can be kept for many years..some even being passed down for generations. Some tips for happy cactus they need well drained soil ..a commercial cactus soil or rich all purpose potting soil is best They need to be kept moist but not wet, so water from the top and do not let it sit in standing water.. once a week is enough while it is blooming..but check to make sure it does not dry out Keep in an eastern exposure,or bright indirect light..it does not want to be in full hot sunlight room temp 55 to 65 (remember it is a shade dweller in the wild) the blooms will last for several days.. should the leaves/stems get limp check for hydration..if it is too dry it will wilt and if it is too wet you need to let it dry out. The flowers will drop if they are exposed to temperatures below 55 in a draft or cold room and if they are too wet or dry.. these cactus love to be root bound.. you do not need to move them up unless they are pushing out of their pots..then go only up one size when you replant. Christmas cactus can be kept for years.. in the spring, after frost has passed, the pot can live outside in a shade garden where it will gather strength for the next years bloom.. See more

Today we closed up the last of the perennial house.. shorter days and cold temperatures have sent most of them into dormancy and the rest are sure to follow.

The seasons are in transition... the newly painted greenhouses look lovely with a nice icing of snow!!
