This valuable work brings together major themes in Greek Patristic anthropology -- the image of God in the human being, the Fall from Paradise, and the human condition in the present life and in the age to come. St. Basil the Great addresses the questions posed by the human condition with characteristic clarity, balance, and sobriety. Translated into English for the first time are two discourses on the creation of humanity and a homily on the causes of evil. The Christian tradition often seems to give only grudging approval to the married life, particularly its sexual aspect. In these sermons of St John Chrysostom we find an important corrective to this view. Although himself a monk, Chrysostom had a profound understanding of the needs of his congregation. Inspired by the Epistles to the Corinthians and Ephesians, he discusses the reasons God instituted marriage--primarily to promote holiness of the husband and wife, and only secondarily to produce children. Chrysostom goes on to discuss sexual relations, the mutual responsibilities of marriage, and parenting. Available here: https://svspress.com/on-marriage-and-family-life-st-john-c/

30% OFF St John Chrysostom's "On Wealth and Poverty." https://svspress.com/on-wealth-and-poverty-st-john-chrysos/ These sermons are some of the richest classical commentaries on the Christian life. Knowing well the realities of life in the world, the temptation of rich and poor alike, this great orator--"the golden-mouthed"--addresses the questions of wealth and poverty in the lives of the people of his day. And yet, as the modern reader is confronted with his words, it becomes apparent that he, too, is being addressed; Chrysostom's words are words proclaiming the truth of the Gospel to all people of all times. The message of the story of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16.19-31) is brought home to every person in these six sermons of Chrysostom with clarity, insight into the human dilemma, compassion, and judgment.

A really nice review of "The Analogy of Love" by Demetrios Harper. Click here to read the whole review: https://readingreligion.org/books/analogy-love "Harper’s philosophical and scholarly skills, along with his sense for cultural trends, are elegantly manifest in this expansive monograph. I indeed recommend this book both to serious, academic readers of Maximus and the patristic tradition in general. These academics and their students will benefit not only from Harper’s very good reading of Maximus but also from his placement of Maximus next to the modern ethical tradition." https://svspress.com/the-analogy-of-love/

This critical exposition of the theology of Saint Sophrony Sakharov (1896-1993)--an outstanding Christian ascetic, monk, and mystic of the twentieth century--conveys the message that Christianity is not just an academic discipline but very reality, life itself. This reality imprints a mark of indisputable authenticity upon each of Fr Sophrony's writings. Strange to abstract scholasticism, his words breathe the inspiration of the living tradition, where Christ is the Divine Absolute, "the same yesterday, today, and forever" (Heb 13:8). The healing ministry of Jesus Christ is a primary task of the Church. "The Anointing of the Sick" describes the healing ministry of the Church as it is expressed in Scripture, Tradition, and the liturgical life, focusing particularly on the sacrament of the anointing of the sick. The author discusses both the history and theology of this sacrament, which has its roots in the Tradition of the Church as expressed in James 5:14-15: Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven."
