If you are between 18 and 34 years old, there is a 25% chance you are underwater in your mortgage. According to a survey conducted by the FINRA Investor Education Foundation of 25,500 adults, underwater mortgages and late payments are all too common among today’s young adults. The percentages drop as age increases according to the study 18% between the ages of 35 and 54 claimed to be underwater and only 8% over the age of 55. Aside from the obvious implications of being behind on your mortgage, or owing more than your house is worth, this study highlights the financial struggle of American’s young families and adults, who have already borne the burden of war, economic collapse, poor job prospects and out of control education costs.
