Shoecraft Road runs parallel to Ven Rensselaer Street, along the West side of the Harbor. Shoecraft references the name of the first steamboat on Onondaga Lake in 1871. . . .... The clip below was pulled from the Archives of the Onondaga Historical Association by @onondagahisassn’s Bob Searing. - Contemporary newspaper reports from the Syracuse Journal confirm that the R.P. Shoecraft, an eleven ton steam yacht with a prop, did travel on Onondaga Lake around July 30, 1871. The Shoecraft was built by Ross Peleg Shoecraft in 1865/66. Shoecraft was born in Penfield, NY in 1841. He was a Civil War Veteran who served in the 13th Volunteer Infantry. In 1871, the ship was owned by Fred Ganier, who purchased from Shoecraft in Buffalo and traveled to Syracuse via the enlarged Erie Canal. Mr. Ganier and a party of local dignitaries including, fmr. Lt. Gov. Thomas Alvord (nickname was "Old Salt") and former Mayor Stewart, took the Oswego Canal to the outlet at Onondaga Lake. According to accounts, it took about fifty minutes to pass the five mile level from the Salina Locks to the outlet of the lake. Salt Shed Drive runs perpendicular to Ven Rensselaer Street along the City Park. Its name referenced the salt drying sheds that covered the south end of the lake prior to the construction of the Syracuse Inner Harbor in 1915. In the mid-1800s, Syracuse was the salt production capital of the united States. Syracuse became a city in 1848 and was nicknamed the Salt City. Salt production remained the primary industry in Syracuse until the 1870s when beer brewing took over wi...th the influx of German immigrants. The land in and around the southern end of Onondaga Lake was once known as the Onondaga Salt Reservation. It contained an estimated 50,000 solar sheds and 300 boiling blocks, where water was evaporated or boiled out of brine pumped from wells around the lake. Iron Pier Drive and Iron Pier Apartments are named after the Iron Pier Resort (1890-1906) located along Onondaga Lake’s south shore, near the current Destiny USA. Iron Pier was built by the People's Railway Co. on Wolf Street in 1890 to generate business for the railway. The resort's long pavilion was constructed of wood and contained bowling alleys, a concert hall and a restaurant. It operated until 1907, when competition from resorts emerging along the lake's western shor...e put it out of business. Divers conducting an archaeological study for Honeywell in 2010 observed the remains of the Iron Pier's dock under water, but nothing remains on the surface, much of which is covered with trees. . . .
