Living at Home, NOT in a Home. For too long New Yorkers have languished in nursing homes and other congregate care settings, jeopardizing residents’ health and safety. While COVID-19 did not create these problems in the nursing home industry, it has greatly exacerbated them. Over 7,000 people have died of COVID in nursing homes in New York, and this total does not account for nursing home residents who were hospitalized before dying of the virus. Now the virus is once again... spiking in New York State. The State should be ensuring people can access community-based services as an alternative to nursing home care. This means ensuring home care is available by paying home care workers, including those in the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance (CDPA) program, a living wage. It also includes implementing policies that allow people to swiftly leave institutions and move back home with loved ones to mitigate risk during this ongoing crisis. What You Can Do: We are working to make sure that Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature use this crisis as a wake-up call and invest in putting our senior and disabled neighbors in appropriate and safe environments at homeand not in nursing homes or other similar settings. Send an email to let New York’s elected officials know that you support Living At Home and Not In A Home! Act Now Click here: https://ilny.us/advocacy/action-alerts to send your message
