This past Sunday, 11/9, the second grade students (Kita Bet) had the privilege of meeting the renowned author Stephanie Sorkin. Ms. Sorkin read from her newest book, Am I A Unicorn? The students enjoyed the unicorn story about identity and self-discovery and participated in a meaningful discussion about what is important to them and what makes each of them unique. A culminating rainbow art activity took place as each student explored different parts of their identity as well as their relationship to their Jewish identity. Each student received their own signed copy of Ms. Sorkin's book as a keepsake. We are so grateful to have Ms. Sorkin as our partner as she engaged our students during this difficult time of social distancing. It brought many smiles (under their masks) and much excitement to TBS Religious School.

On Monday night, Rabbi Rosenthal met with our Makom high school students, and the group tackled the question "Are 'Anti-Semitic' and 'Anti-Zionist' the Same Thing?" Students explored the intersection between anti-Israel sentiment and anti-Semitism, and shared ideas about how we can be effective advocates for Israel. If you'd like to learn more about these topics, follow the link to see the Anti-Defamation League's excellent resources on combating anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism.

Of the many emotions that parents, students and teachers have experienced during this unprecedented pandemic year, gratitude may not be the first one that springs to mind. Without a doubt, 2020 has challenged us like no other year before, and Temple Beth Sholom Religious School is certainly no exception. While summer is generally our time to recharge and retool, this summer took on a life of its own as our entire concept of education and community-building required radical re...Continue reading
