I saw this guy in Montreal in 2017 at the messenger world championships. He looked Asian, but not Japanese. When I had been a courier, the only couriers that came from Asia for the worlds were the Japanese and the Australians. Ever since I’d been keeping a stat sheet on where couriers were from, from the time that I had helped organize world championships in the states, I was always curious to find out the new countries where courier companies were sprouting up. The evolution of self-propulsion has levels. It has textures and different states of mind. If you are looking for a bike ride that will instill confidence, stoicism, camaraderie and some problem solving abilities in your kid, you need to put them on Teen Treks. I didn’t ever ride on Teen Treks, but I can tell you with complete confidence, that riding a bike, and riding it far put something in me that teachers, parents, friends and family had been trying to put in me since I was a little kid. It was a little embarrassing. It was the Wednesday night dinner at my friends’ house. It was a group messenger dinner in SF and there were about 15 of us. It was off to a great start. While we waited for our host of the week to cook us dinner, someone put a tape of Quicksilver into the VCR. We were full of anticipation, a bunch of assholes preparing to rip the regrettably first in a line of stupid movies about messengers. Cathy is the pioneer of bike shorts. She became smitten with cycling when she was 10 years old while riding with the Girl Scouts. Her whole life has been a love affair with bikes. The journey and the millions of miles she's spent in the saddle led her creative mind to look for a solution for a perennial problem. Riding hurts. Bike racing is hard. I tried it. Wasn’t particularly good at it. To get into the top echelons, you have to dedicate yourself to riding about 500 miles per week, if we’re really being serious about it. I’ve done a lot of sports, they’re all hard, that’s the point. That’s why you practice and train, to get the competitive edge, both in endurance, stamina and quickness, but also getting fluent in the language of that sport. I got my first custom bicycle frame last summer. I have been riding bikes for 35 years and this was the first time when I got onto a bike, and it felt like it fit. I’ve had upwards of 30 bikes in my life. I never had a lot of money and even less patience to really find something that fit me. Women bike messengers have done an extraordinary service to the cause of feminism, just by being bike messengers in some 150 cities worldwide. There have been female messengers probably as long as there have been bike messengers, although the profession has been dominated by men since its inception at the turn of the 20th century. Per usual, little has been written specifically about female messengers. [ 3,810 more words ] https://imaginomix.wordpress.com//womens-history-month-bi/

Jalonda Justice Hill - Colored Girls Bike Too It is hard, being the only one. It’s also hard being the first one. I have some experience with this. I have been the only woman at courier companies, often times their first female courier. I have been the only woman in Marine Corps units. I’ve been welcome in some spaces, vilified in some and tolerated in others. [ 4,435 more words ] https://imaginomix.wordpress.com//womens-history-jalonda-/

The other night I interviewed Nelson Vails, a courier from the late 1970’s who won a silver medal in the 1984 Olympics. If you’ve seen Quicksilver, he’s the guy that beats the snot out of Kevin Bacon, he on his bike, Kevin in a cab. I was curious why, having achieved such acclaim, did he always reference his messenger years in all the supporting research I was doing for my blog about him. It cannot be overstated how powerful a mark Mary McLeod Bethune left on history. What often gets left out of history is the how much white women have benefited from the bravery of Black women. In their difficult quest for liberation, in demanding human rights, we white women have always reaped the reward of their example and their struggle. So, I’d like to set the record straight on why Mary McLeod Bethune is one of my greatest heroines, and that I owe her a debt of gratitude.
