Terrace Hose and Chemical Company #3 20.01.2021

At 1725hrs the OFD was alerted for an Unknown Type Fire at Service Scrap Metal on Hampton Road in ‘Oil City’. All companies quickly turned out and were on the road when Dispatch informed all responding units that as per a call back there was a piece of machinery on fire in the scrap yard. Upon arrival of the Chiefs, Oceanside FD Command was established and it was confirmed that a large excavator was on fire. Units from Hose Company #2 were first due, followed by Units from Hose Company #1 @poch_e246, Engine Company #1, and then Terrace. Two attack lines were stretched and put into operation, as was several hundred feet of 5 supply hose. The fire was declared knocked down at 1743, and the scene secured at 1841. All units were under the command of the Chief of the Department. #FirstDueFromTheNorth #OFD

Earlier, about an hour ago, we were toned out for an AFA in Hose 2’s first due box area in the south of town, which ended up being a false alarm. Upon arrival at every alarm we seek out a fire hydrant that we can connect to in case of a fire, and likewise at almost every call the junior firefighter, member with the least amount of time, on the rig gets out to open up and flush out the hydrant. We do this to ensure that not only does each hydrant work as intended and flow water appropriately, but also to clear out any debris or objects which had been stuck into the hydrant.

Tonight company members and officers took the opportunity to plan out trainings in areas that newer members wanted to review, discussed and went over our Geiger counter, and reviewed Propane and Natural gas detection on alarms.

Tonight the Officers and Members of Terrace would like to congratulate the newest member of the OFD and Terrace, Jordan. Jordan is a full time college student who has been hanging around and shown interest in joining over the past six months. Welcome brother!

The members spent the morning going over Engine 248 from top to bottom and took the time to repack one of our fire to hydrant beds. When all the tools and equipment were all in order the rig was cleaned and waxed. Between the new light bars and the major cleaning the engine looks like a new rig. Strong work lads.

Today we welcomed back one of our engines, E248. It’s been out of service for replacement of the emergency lights on the roof. Previously E248 had been equipped with five (five short) separate rotating light casements, but they have now been replaced with three (one long and two short) LED light bars.

As another year passes us by we pause to remember our Brother, our Chief, our Friend Chief Thomas Bettes Sr. who we lost on this day in 2003. We will Never Forget his service to Terrace and the OFD. May he continue to Rest In Peace.

The OFD met yesterday to remember the residents of Oceanside who lost their lives during or due to the Terrorist Attacks on 9/11, especially those who were first responders on that terrible day and worked on the pile for months afterwards. We will never forget, especially... Firefighter Thomas Gardner (FDNY HazMat 1) Firefighter Kenneth Marino (FDNY Rescue 1) Firefighter John Florio (FDNY Engine 214)... Firefighter Robert Spear (FDNY Engine 50/26) Detective Luis Alvarez (NYPD) #NeverForget

Our 9/11 Memorial area got a freshening up this week just in time for the 19th Anniversary of that terrible day. Special thanks to our District Employees for their work, and our own Michael Graham at Flowers by Mike for donating the wreath. Special tip of the helmet to Tommy Jr at Dee's Nursery, when he heard what the members were purchasing the new stone chips for he graciously refused to take our money. Thank you all! There are still good people in the world. NEVER FORGET!

The Members of Terrace kept our annual tradition going of hanging ribbons on all the 9/11 Firefighter Memorial Street signs in our district. We also stopped by NYPD Detective Luis Alvarez's residence with a ribbon and then stopped on Daly Blvd to hang one at a memorial sign for Firefighter Michael Kiefer. While we were there we noticed one of the flags on the memorial missing. Enter Long Beach Assistant Chief John Marino and Lieutenant Teddy Reinhard who arrived with a Memorial Flag in less than 10 minutes and members of both departments hung it proudly. There's saying NEVER FORGET and there's showing we don't! May God Bless then and their families, friends and fellow first responders.

The Officers and Members of Terrace are mourning the loss of Island Park Fire Department Ex Chief William Herbert today. Willie was not only our Brother firefighter but also part of our extended family here at Terrace as he was the brother in law of our own Ex Captain Joel Rutsky. Our thoughts and prayers are with Willie's wife Wendy, children Francine and William and their families and friends. May he Rest In Peace.

Senator Todd Kaminsky stopped by our company quarters today to present a proclamation to Ex-Chief, and now Past President of FASNY, Steven Klein. Senator Kaminsky was kind enough to speak a few words about Steve’s service to not only our fire department and our town, but also to our state and its firefighters as a whole.

Congratulations to Firefighter Igor Saperson! Two years ago today he was sworn into the OFD as a probationary member and since then has done nothing but work his hardest to be the best he can be! Igor is consistently one of the hardest working members of Terrace, frequently having to be forced to stop working or cleaning, and maintains a rather high percentage of alarms attended compared to alarms we were toned out for. Thank you for your service and congratulations Igor! #FirstDueFromTheNorth
