Congratulations to Bisa Butler, our featured artist at KAM back in 2016, who was recently featured in The New York Times (Oct 21) and is ALSO in this weekend's NYT special Arts section. An exhibition of her work will be on view at the Art Institute of Chicago (Nov 16, 2020 - April 19, 2021). We couldn't be more excited about her recent critical and public attention for her incredible fiber works. Congratulations! https://www.nytimes.com//black-women-artists-museum-shows.

STUDENT SHOWCASE is a new feature on the KAM website that, as the name implies, showcases the talents of Kingsborough art students. The first honoree is Brandon Laurent, a photographer whose wonderful portraits match technical skill with artistic expression. Check out Brandon's work on the KAM website: http://www.kccartmuseum.org/student-showcase.html

The exhibition "You Can't Catch It Holding Hands," which was open only one day before the campus closed in March, is now available for viewing online. The exhibition focused on a 1990 animated film on the AIDS crisis by Philip Mathews, based upon drawings by his mother, the famed French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle. The online version of the exhibition features all of the work that was in the show, as well as related ephemera from the making of the film. http://www.kccartmuseum.org/niki.html

Congratulations to former Kingsborough student Destinee Ross-Sutton, who this year curated BLACK VOICES/BLACK MICROCOSM at CFHILL in Stockholm, Sweden, and most recently an online exhibition for Christie's auction house, SAY IT LOUD (I'm Black and I'm Proud), which ran from July 31-August 18. You can learn more about her incredible curatorial work by visiting the CFHILL website (https://www.cfhill.com/black-voices-black-microcosm-by-dest) and Christie's (https://www.christies.com//Christies-presents-new-online-e).

2020 has been, to say the least, a most unusual semester at Kingsborough, and a formidable time for colleges and universities around the world. While the much-anticipated Annual Student Art Exhibition could not take place this year, KAM and the KCC Art Department wanted to recognize the accomplishments of our industrious and resourceful students, who completed their studies under very challenging circumstances. Equally admirable is the dedication of our Art History, Fine Arts..., and Graphic Design professors, who helped their students realize their artistic goals despite the limitations of distance and the absence of the traditional studio and classroom setting. As you might expect, our students met that challenge with courage, perseverance, and the indomitable Kingsborough spirit. Directions 2020: Annual Student Art Exhibition [Virtual Edition] is viewable as individual iMovies for each artistic category (Drawing, Painting, Photography, etc.), and/or as a photo gallery. Enjoy! http://www.kccartmuseum.org/directions-2020--videos.html

At the end of the spring semester, KAM will present an online, digital version of Directions 2020: Annual Student Art Exhibition. It has been a trying time for many, and we appreciate the hard work of our students and faculty in making the difficult transition from hands-on studio training to distance learning. Stay tuned for more information about KAM's digital student exhibition. Stay well, stay safe, friends.

Another digital exhibition currently on the KAM website is "Keep Clean! Health & Wellness Posters from the Works Progress Administration (WPA), 1936-1941." This online exhibit features a selection of posters created for the WPA, a program that was part of FDR's New Deal. The link is in the comments below. We hope you and your family are safe during this troubling time.

While KAM may be closed this semester, we have a number of digital exhibitions currently online on the KAM website. "Ida A. Craft: Brooklyn's Suffrage Pioneer" focuses on an important but largely overlooked figure in the suffrage movement of the early 20th-century: Ida A. Craft. Her tireless efforts to secure the vote for women were instrumental in the passage of the 19th Amendment. The link can be found in the comments below. We hope you and your family are safe during this troubling time.

As CUNY classes are making the transition to full online for this semester due to the Coronavirus, KAM has revised its exhibition calendar. Please note that the current Niki de Saint Phalle exhibition will remain on view through July 22, which hopefully will allow the students and faculty in the summer semester an opportunity to visit. Unfortunately the next exhibition, Barry Rosenthal: Found in Nature, has been postponed until spring 2021. At the moment it seems extremely u...nlikely that the annual student exhibition will happen as planned. Submissions are still currently being accepted for the Fourth Annual Rarebit Animation Festival, scheduled for June 4, although it may be necessary to postpone the actual event. Also note that KAM is currently closed; please watch for updates as to if and when we can reopen. We apologize for these necessary changes to the schedule, but the decisions were made with the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors in mind. We wish you all the best in these uncertain times, but are hopeful that the resilient spirit of the Kingsborough community, and New Yorkers in general, will prevail. Be well, be safe, be careful.
