Colonial John Brown’s Death at Stone Arabia (240 years ago on this day, October 19, 1780) The London Chronicle Vol. XLIX. No 3769. From Thursday, January 25, to... Saturday, January 27, 1781. Page 95. By persons lately from Albany, which they left the 7th inft. we are informed that Sir John Johnson had made a descent upon on the rebels by the way of Oswego, burned Schoharie, and 12 houses in Ball’s Town, at which last he made prisoners Col. James Gordon, an Assembly man, with Captains Benedict and Collins, and about 30 men. Passing by Fort Hunter to Canajoharie, crosses to Stone Arabia, where he burned houses of the disaffected, was attacked by a notable partisan, Colonel Brown (who had greatly distinguished himself in reducing the garrison at Fort Chamblee to surrender in 1776, and taking the baggage, and cutting off part of General Burgoyne’s rear, at Ticonderoga Landing, in 1777), this successful partisan was killed on the spot, with sixty of his men, Newspapers in England would reprint stories of the American Revolutionary War from American newspapers. This particular newspaper reported the happenings from states/cities such as Philadelphia, New York and others. Note the irony as the next story from New York states: On Tuesday last arrived in town the lady and son of Brigadier General Arnold. The back story is Colonel Brown and General Arnold were rivals from pretty much the start of the war during the Quebec Campaign of 1775. The irony being that two rivals, both for the American cause, one would meet his fate before the war’s end, while the other would become one of the most famous traitors in American History. *****NEW BOOK***** Schenectady Genesis, Volume II: The Creation of an American City from an Anglo-Dutch Colonial Town, ca. 1760-1800 by John F. Gearing, Esq. (Author) & Chris Leonard (Editor) To order, please visit: https://fortplainmuseum.square.site//schenectady-gene/724 Schenectady Genesis, Volume II, is a follow-up to Susan Staffa’s highly acclaimed first volume, the Colonial Crucible 1661-1774. This standalone volume traces the four most tumultuous decades in the hist...ory of Schenectady: from the ending of the French & Indian War into the War for Independence, and later Schenectady’s own fight for independence from Albany. At the same time, the town was burgeoning into an economic powerhouse at the center of the international fur trade, while trying not to tear itself apart over who owned the town’s Common Lands. This all plays against the growing friction of Schenectady’s transition away from its Dutch roots into a town with a greater English influence. It is not a stretch to state the armies and militia from Schenectady, Albany and Tryon counties played major roles in securing the northern border and helping to turn the tide in the Battles of Saratoga and skirmishes throughout the Mohawk Valley. The work strongly captures the state of tension that enveloped the region as fears of invasion from the north echoed throughout the valley. While military coverage is one of the great strengths of the book, Schenectady Genesis, Volume II, is so much more than a broadsheet to stake military claims. Detailed explications and charts covering businesses and their owners, churches and religious figures, governmental leaders, the growth of education in the city, and the roles of everyday citizens are all here. Extensive and well-document endnotes provide a wealth of historical information from primary sources that add flesh to storylines that would otherwise be ignored.
