The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture is also partnering with the library to explore the life and legacy of Henrietta Lacks. Dr. Spencer R. Crew, curator of the museum's exhibition "Defending Freedom, Defining Freedom: Era of Segregation 1876-1968," will moderate a dialogue with the Lacks Family at BPL's Dweck Center for Contemporary Culture on May 18. #HeLa

The National Human Genome Research Institute, developers of "Genome: Unlocking Life's Code, is helping to bring the family of Henrietta Lacks to Macon Library. Don't miss this historic weekend!

Happy Mother's Day Weekend! Did you know Henrietta Lacks is considered to be the "Mother of Modern Science and Medicine"? In 1951, her cells were removed from her body and used to create the HeLa cell line--the first human cells to thrive and grow in a laboratory. Her cells would be used to develop the polio vaccine, in-vitro fertilization techniques and cancer treatments. Join us to pay homage to Henrietta Lacks and meet her descendants May 17-18.
