This video also explains exemptions from the English and/or the civics exam and about applying for medical waivers from portions of the naturalization process. Our hearts are with the Prude family and our entire community as we grapple with yet another loss of a person of color at the hands of those charged to serve and protect. The Legal Aid Society of Rochester condemns the murder of Daniel Prude by officers of the Rochester Police Department. As a long-standing provider of civil legal services in Rochester, the Legal Aid Society of Rochester calls on all members of our community to unite in ending police brutality and racial inj...ustice. We urge our Attorney General to conclude the investigation with all due speed, including providing recommendations for systemic changes to all law enforcement in New York State. We believe every human deserves to be treated with dignity, equality, and fairness especially those facing crisis. We remain committed to working to create an environment in our community that values equitable treatment and access to legal counsel, so every person is indeed treated with dignity, equality, and fairness. #JusticeforDanielPrude #blacklivesmatter

In an effort to keep our community members in their homes, together with Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc. and Volunteer Legal Services Project (VLSP), What we’re trying to do is build a system that would allow every person to get represented at Rochester City Court, in the town of Greece, the town of Irondequoit and the village of East Rochester." - Mark Muoio, LASROC's Housing & Consumer Law Unit Director Read more about our efforts to provide access to counsel here:
There are a number of factors that could lead to a possible eviction crisis. The pandemic has put many people out of work, and now additional federal support for unemployment has run out. Advocates say something has to be done very soon or the crisis will hit Western New York. Hear more from LASROC, Catholic Family Center, and Volunteer Legal Services Project (VLSP) on this episode of WXXI News' Connections with Evan Dawson.

There's still time to complete the Census online! Why is the census so important? The results are used to determine how much funding local communities receive for key public services and how many seats each state gets in Congress. State and local officials also use census counts to draw boundaries for congressional, state legislative, and school districts. https://my2020census.gov/
Racism is a crisis that has plagued our country and community for centuries. LASROC is resolved to continue advancing and protecting the legal rights of the disenfranchised, and therefore we’re taking this opportunity to again denounce hate and racial injustice. The Legal Aid Society of Rochester stands with the Greater Rochester NY Black Agenda Group to affirm that RACISM IS A PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS affecting our entire society.
