Zoom in to see some clothes from the 1860s. Notes that the 1850s huge hoop skirts were out of fashion by this time. Men’s suits were rather snappy too.
Great example of 19th century clothing. "Portrait of Seated Gentleman J.D. Hoyt Buffalo NY"
What was happening when the Schenck house was built? Maine and Missouri became the 23rd and 24th states to join the union. It would be great to have the building cleaned, restored and decorated with buntings and flags from 1821 for the Memorial day, 4th of July and other commemorative days. Number State Joined 23 Maine 15-MAR 1820 24 Missouri 10-AUG 1821... 25 Arkansas 15-JUN 1836 Flag sold at auction: Circa 1820 Historic 24-Star American Flag 6/6/6/6 Design c. 1820 Large Size 24-Star American Flag, with 24 Hand-Sewn, Double-Appliqued Cotton Linen Stars configured in 6/6/6/6 horizontal rows, upon its Blue Muslin Canton, Very Fine. Circa 1820, this 24-Star American Flag represents the State of Missouri's entrance into the Union. This original Hand-Sewn American Flag is made of Muslin Linen, measures 46 x 83 with 24 Hand-Sewn, Double-Appliqued Cotton Stars. The Stars are configured in the rare 6/6/6/6 Pattern, in horizontal rows, within the muslin canton. The fly is constructed of 13 Hand-Sewn muslin stripes.
It is May, and every good fundraiser can easily take nine months to a year to plan ahead. Friends of Schenck House will be submitting a proposal to the county to put on a fund raiser with the proceeds to benefit the Schenck House restoration. The goal is a fundraiser with a Spring theme... e.g. tent, apple pie, hard cider and maybe even a 1920s swing band ! The volunteer group will have a lot to brainstorm, do and be proud of... for those interested please let me know below or pm !
It is not often we get to see paintings of people from Western New York. Here are two unknown people, from the Robert Perry estate collection in Orchard Park being auctioned off. His collar is 1820s and her hair is late 1820s and 1830s. There is no artist listed or names for the sitters. But this gives us an example of style in the Buffalo area for the time of the Schenck House.
