February 26 (alt 27) 1775 The war might have started early with British Colonel Alexander Leslie's Sunday morning attempt to take Salem MA’s cannons. Leslie (s...ent by General Gage) and his commanders in Boston were sure that the Puritans of Salem would be too busy in church to notice. The sailors at Marblehead (where they embarked from) were not the same churchgoing folk as the rest of Salem and raised the alarm. The citizens of the town met the soldiers at the North draw bridge and the ensuing standoff ended when the town Pastor negotiated a compromise for the British. The town allowed the British soldiers to cross the bridge and travel 50 rods into town before turning around and departing. This was done so that the British could claim to have followed their orders and reached their destination. The cannons and other arms however had been moved aways while the standoff was going on. Three months later a similar situation at Lexington and Concord would not end as easily. (The facts around this event were largely compiled by historians after all the participants were deceased. While the event did occur, all the details surrounding it cannot be positively established.) See more

This is a monument from Finger Ground. Does anyone have any ideas what could have caused the indentations? And another question-any thoughts about where to apply for grants for repairing Catharine Post’s headstone? Mr. Holmes said it’ll take several hundred dollars. Thank you.
