Today the ladies got to shop through donations from a sample sale! A great time was had by all.

The food insecurity crisis in New York City is worsening by the day. An estimated 1.6 million New Yorkers are unable to put food on their tables. Tonight we welcomed a family to our Wednesday Night Community Dinner. Both parents lost their jobs and are unemployed. They brought their nine-year-old son with them in the hopes of receiving a meal for their family. Thanks to your donations, we were able to provide them with three bags of food.

EXCITING NEWS! After months of careful preparation by our loving staff, The Dwelling Place has reopened. We welcomed several women to our building on 40th Street today, with more scheduled to arrive by the end of the month. Please help us welcome them by leaving them a message in the comments below! We are so grateful for all of the phone calls, emails, and letters that we have received throughout the pandemic. Your care for the women we serve especially during what has been such a difficult time has not gone unappreciated. We would not have been able to reopen without you. Thank you!

We’ve taken another step toward reopening! After 43 years of supporting the thousands of people who have visited The Dwelling Place, our stairs were in dire need of repair. Please join us as we wish Sr. Nancy Chiarello a happy retirement! As a young nurse working at St. Clare's Hospital in Manhattan, Sr. Nancy witnessed homeless women searching for food in garbage cans on the street. In 1977, she and four Franciscan Sisters of Allegany petitioned the leaders of their congregation for approval to open a homeless shelter for women and The Dwelling Place was born. Throughout the next 43 years, Sr. Nancy helped countless women build independent lives. It is impossible to quantify all that she has done through her work at The Dwelling Place. We are deeply grateful for her service.

Thanks to a generous donor, the ladies who came for dinner tonight received their choice of a variety of delicious packaged meals Asian tofu, traditional Italian food, macaroni and cheese, and Thai food along with a bag of groceries containing fresh fruits and vegetables, yogurt, cake, and soup.

Hello, friends of The Dwelling Place! Much has happened since we last posted on Facebook, and we have many exciting things to share with you in the days to come. Let's start with our Wednesday Night Community Dinners! Our Wednesday Night Dinners have resumed, albeit with some changes. Due to the ongoing pandemic, we are unable to serve the women in our dining room. Instead, we have been greeting them at the door with a mask-covered smile and a hot meal to go. Thanks to the g...enerosity of our donors, we have also been able to provide them with hand sanitizer, masks, socks, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and other necessary products. This week we served 17 women, and we expect that number to grow in the weeks to come. The dinners have given us the opportunity to catch up with old friends, as well as feed people who are in need. Many of the women who come to us are hungry for community and companionship as well. They miss socializing with the other ladies who attended our community dinners, and we miss hosting them. We are looking forward to the day when we can invite them inside to have a meal in our dining room again.

Today we bid a fond farewell to Sr. Joann Sambs on her last day as administrator of The Dwelling Place. For the past six years, she has been a welcoming and comforting presence for the women who have lived with us, compassionately supporting them on their journeys out of homelessness. As the administrator, she has managed the day-to-day operations and led The Dwelling Place’s fundraising efforts, providing a safe and stable environment for the women. If you have ever received a phone call or a letter from The Dwelling Place, you know what a special person she is and how dearly she will be missed. We wish her all the best in her new role caring for the sisters at the retirement center of the Sisters of St. Agnes in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

In the midst of the pandemic and lockdown, you have helped us raise $27,300 of our $30,000 goal. Last evening at The Dwelling Place, masks and take-out meals were given out at the door to our Wednesday dinner guests. The masks were home-made and delivered to us by a neighbor, Sandra. So many of you have reached out in love and concern for us during these past weeks, and for that we thank you. We wish our community a blessed Holy Week.
