Are you a woman of color and currently expecting or recently given birth? Then you are embarking on a new journey and we want to invite you to join KerriAnne Sejour via Zoom for our first expectant and new mothers group. The group will focus on normalizing and supporting the transition to motherhood while addressing the unspoken changes, expectations, judgements, limitations, and associated fears. During a woman's pregnancy she is often overwhelmed by many unavoidable existe...ntial questions such as: what my body will mean after pregnancy or will I be a good mother? This group's overarching aim is to address and reduce society's portrayal of pregnancy and motherhood as an isolating journey in a woman’s life while simultaneously celebrating the uniqueness to each and every woman’s pregnancy journey and story. Starts February 17th. Go to the link in bio for more details #bipoc #maternalmentalhealth #maternalhealth #momlife #blackmoms #therapy #supportgroups

There are incredible mental benefits of mindfulness-based practices, which include meditations, mindful eating, mindful walking, and so on. Yoga is a physical practice of mindfulness; while doing yoga routines and postures, the attention is always brought back to the breath and noticing the physical sensations in the body. Why is mindfulness so important? Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment. We often get wrapped up in thoughts, which can sometimes turn int...o overwhelming waves of anxiety, or other times appear as everyday stress. These thoughts fill our heads, putting us on auto-pilot and ignoring what is happening within our bodies and in our surroundings. Mindfulness teaches us to transfer attention out of our head and into the present moment; this creates space in our mind. It also allows us to see our thoughts as just thoughts, and feelings as just feelings, becoming curious, nonjudgmental observers of ourselves. Yoga connects the mind and the body. What does that mean? If the mind is in a state of distress, let’s say anxiety, it can appear in cognitive ways, such as ruminating over a certain situation or having a thought over and over, but it can also show up in physical manifestations of the body, such as a racing heartbeat, tightness of chest, shortness of breath, and tension in body parts. When you work on calming down those physical sensations, it automatically sends signals to the brain to do the same. It refocuses our attention from thinking to the physical act of connecting with the body and breath, clearing up space in the mind and quieting the chatter. Interested in experiencing the benefits of yoga first hand? Check the link in bio for our Yoga for Anxiety and Stress class series, starting December 8th. Many of us have a nagging voice or harsh inner narrative-- when something goes wrong, or to motivate ourselves towards goals. Or we may judge ourselves for what we feel, which adds to our distress. These self-critical moments end up causing pain and become a root cause or amplifier for other sources of distress. What if instead, we brought openness, curiosity, interest, and kindness to our experiences? How would our wellness shift? By cultivating more self-compassion, we lear...n to speak to ourselves in a way that we would to a loved one. This workshop will explore how to bring greater compassion to ourselves, our bodies, and our minds through journaling/reflection, group discussion and a gentle yoga practice. Compassion revolves around a mindful acceptance of ourselves fully, "flaws" and all, without judgement or criticism. This workshop will help you examine your inner critic, and reframe how you view yourself, through a lens of self-love, worth, and compassion. Yoga will include restorative and yin poses, which are held for 2-7 minutes each, to induce deep stretching to release tension and relaxation. These also activate the parasympathetic nervous system which helps the body and mind rest and calm down. Prior yoga experience is not needed. Please have a journal/paper, pen, yoga mat or soft space, 2-3 pillows, a blanket, and water or something to hydrate. Cost is at sliding scale $30-40. DATE: July 25th, 2020, 10 - 11:30AM (Zoom Session) #yoga #therapy #therapybrooklyn #healing #selfcare

Grief is the form love takes when our loved ones pass away. If you’ve lost a loved one during the covid-19 crisis, join Liz and Anjali via Zoom for Therapy Brooklyn’s first bereavement group. In this group you can learn how to adjust to life without your loved one and find community with others who will be able to relate to your grief during these isolating times. We understand that we are in the midst of an unprecedented period of time, which may exacerbate feelings of isol...ation and despair. In this group work, you will make a 10 session commitment to yourself and group members. You will have the opportunity to share your experiences, thoughts, and emotions to build community with those who have suffered loss as well. We believe expressing one’s authentic self with community can be an antidote to these feelings. You will also be called to think more deeply about your relationship with others, and to process how you are feeling with the group collectively. Group Details: Who Can Join: Anyone who has lost someone during the Covid-19 crisis, 10 session cycle, meets weekly starty July 30th at 7pm, Cost is $50 per session (sliding scale is available) DM or email at [email protected] #grief #loss #therapy #therapybrooklyn #bipoc #grouptherapy #selfcare
